I have discovered a ggg grandfather who served with the above regiment between1800-1824 as a Drum Major - Hugh Martin. |

I assume he got an Army pension? Are the records you have from National Archives his discharge papers? (WO97). It's possible, if you know where he lived, to find out where his pension was paid - he would have collected it locally. This would hopefully give a death date, or may give you an idea of when he died, when he disappears from the record |

The records for where his pension was paid will be at Kew. It would probably be nearest reasonably sized place to where he was living. If you can tell me where he was living, then I'll have a look on the catalogue for you. Do the records you have consist of an Attestation paper, rough outline of where he served and when discharged? If, so, I think it must be his discharge papers. |

That is so kind of you Ann. Just checked the document - came from WO97 580. It seems to be a Statement of his entire service with his discharge date(1823) and reasons for discharge. |

So it was WO97! So did he actually live in Tain when he left the Army? |

Just checked the dates for the pension payment records, and they start around 1842. Hope that's not too late! Nothing for Tain. What would be the nearest biggish town? |

Can't find any record of him actually back in Tain or Scotland. I'm beginning to wonder if he ever made it back to Scotland. |

If you don't know where he lived, there's no chance of finding him in these records - well, unless you wanted to look at every town in the country! Had another idea - if his pension was granted by Chelsea, rather than Kilmainham (Ireland), there are records WO116 which are in date of discharge order, and MAY give an address, although won't tell you when he died. |

Thanks Ann - I'll have to arrange another visit to Kew to have a look at WO116. I appreciate your time and support. Yvonne |
