William Carter is my g.g.grandfather and I am trying to find his antecedents. He married Sarah Edwards on April 17, 1859 and his age was shown as 22 so he was born in 1837 or 1838. The marriage took place in the parrish church in Croydon, Surrey. His father is shown on the marriage certificate as George Carter, gentleman. According to the 1881 British census, William was born in St. Pancras, Middlesex, England. He and Sarah had 13 children (9 survived) and after 2 trips to Canada, eventually settled in Toronto, Canada about 1883. We believe that he was sent to Canada and received money from his family (a remittance man) because he married 'beneath' his class for love. Any suggestions on how to find his birth certificate or any information about him would be most appreciated. |
