Seeking info on my maternal gggrandparents who I believe
lived in Staffordshire. My ggrandfather, William Rutledge, b1870, was born in Staffordshire before his mother married. She did eventually marry his father whose surname was Jones. I have no knowledge of his forename or any children of this marriage.
Believe gggrandfather actually came originally from Wales, possibly a miner.

Where in staffordshire was he born?
Which censuses do you have him on? can you put the details up.
What was his mother called?
When did his mother marry?

The details you have given are too sketchy to find information

Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately I have no other info - this was by word of mouth from my maternal ggrandmother (Rebecca Rutledge nee Cooper) and her daughter, my maternal grandmother (Maud Crofts nee Rutledge).
So, as you can see, really nothing to go on - clutching at straws! I appreciate how few details there are - I suppose I just hoped someone might see the message on the board and I could get lucky.
Thanks anyway

You will have to work backwards through the certificates.
You need to start by buying the birth certificate for Rebecca Cooper. This will give the name of her parents, including her mothers maiden name. Then you can look for the marriage certificate for her parents, which will give both of their fathers names etc.
Do you know roughly when Rebecca Cooper was born and where, so we can find the reference for the certificate

Rebecca Cooper was born in Seymour, Derbyshire, in 1876. Her father was Thomas Cooper b1833 in Lye Waste, Worcestershire. Her mother was Nancy (but I don't have her maiden name). She was born in Holly Hall, Worcestershire.
Please don't waste too much time on this - makes me feel guilty.
Thanks

They seem to say that they came from Lye waste, this is in the parish of Old Swinford. there are lots of Cooper marriages and baptisms there, but they don't appera.

By 1871 they had moved to Dudley and they seem to have been coerced by the priest because Maria who was baptised there

to William Rutledge

You must have bought this certificate surely?

That will tell you who his father was, so you can find him on the earlier censuses.
Although reading back to the beginning, I assume there is no fathers name on the certificate. so how do you know who his mother was and that she married . I am confused

Sorry to cause you confusion. As I mentioned before all this info was by word of mouth from his wife, Rebecca Rutledge (nee Cooper) and my grandmother, Maud Crofts (nee Rutledge). Later in life they lived in Hodthorpe, Derbyshire, and so did some of his siblings - the Jones's.
I was born in Hodthorpe so vaguely remember this but unfortunately I don't remember any forenames. I didn't get a certificate as I thought it would not show his father's name.
I have just made contact with a granddaughter of William and Rebecca and hopefully she will come up with some info. I will then ask if she knows anything about the Rutledge/Jones saga.
Please don't use any more of your time on this and
thanks for all your help.
