Still have difficulyty finding birth of Mabel Dorothy Roberts c1909. Her father is named as Charles William Roberts and he was a pensioner. There are numerous Charles Roberts on the cencus but finding it impossible to connect which one would have been her father. Her daughter and son say that there was some gossip about her being adopted. Can anyone advise how you would go about looking in the adoption route.
Thanks
Jen

There is a Mabel Doris Roberts born at Fulham and registered in 1909. Do you think you could have got her second name wrong. If you ordered this certificate with a check that the father was Charles William Roberts you would only have to pay half the cost if it was wrong. Did the parents not marry. Do you know the mother's name. Irene

Irene
Yes I have seen that entry, but according to her marraige/ death certificate states Dorothy. Mabel died 1947 and my mother and brother were young and didn't know much about her. Charles William Roberts is on her marriage certificate but his occupation is retired. But a relation had mentioned that Mabel was adopted and may have a sister somewhere.
Obviously Mabel is not on the 1901 cencus,
the Charles Roberts that are are many. The ones in London don't seem relevant.
He was married unsure of her name could be Mary or Elizbeth. We also have a record of Charles' death so we think he could have been well into his 50's when he had her.

If she had been adopted do you not think her name would have been changed. If you have her marriage certificate and death certificate her name must have been Dorothy put she may have only been registered as Mabel but christened later with the name Dorothy later. Irene

You could have a point Irene, as some of my relatives including me all thought her real name was Dorothy that is why my middle name is Dorothy. It was only when we went through the paperwork that we realised her name was Mabel
When Mables mum was bombed during the war she came to stay with Mable and her young family in overcrowed accomadation that they were evacuated.too.So my mum feels that she never had siblings other wise she would have gone to them. Also she doesn't remember any aunt or uncles at her grandparent funerals. The 1901 cencus with Charles Roberts shows him of having children. Really do not know where to go from here.

Lindsay , not really. We really think she was born in the London area as that is where we all seem to come from. Before and After the war she was living in London, Kilburn NW6.
So we are talking Willesden, or Paddington areas.
