I don't know if anyone can help me with this as I am running out of ideas!

My Great Grandmother was Mary Robertson born 1885 at Cowgate Cottage, Thurso. She is listed as illegitimate on her birth certificate with her mother as Maggie Robertson of Cowgate Cottage.

Mary went on to marry George Durrand and she has no father on her marriage certificate either (only her mother Maggie Robertson).

However on her death certificate she has a father named as 'Murdo Robertson, Carting Contractor, Cowgate Cottage, Thurso'. Murdo Robertson was the son of David and Mary Robertson of Cowgate Cottage, Thurso.

David and Mary (Senior) did have a daughter called Margaret Robertson.

I am trying to find out who Maggie Robertson was and who the father of Mary Robertson was.

I do know that Maggie had another two illegitimate children - James (1888) and David (1883).

I do have a theory that Mary's mother Maggie was the sister of Murdo and that there has been some confusion when her father was entered on her death certificate.

Can anyone help or suggest any other way of me finding out who Mary's father was?

Many thanks
