Found on Rootsweb
>From Salford Pubs Part One by Neil Richardson page 70 is the following on
The Thistle Tavern.

Cannon Street, The 1831 map shows a line of steeply sloping land, crossed by
three new streets running down to Silk Street (North) George Street,
Arlington Street and (North) Hill Street. The area was known as Shaw Brows
and a few years after the map was drawn, Cannon Street was laid out along
the edge of the brows to connect Adelphi Street with Ford Lane.

One of the first buildings to appear on Cannon Street was a pub. The Thistle
Tavern, built with it's own brewhouse on the corner of Hill Street and
opened about 1837. The earliest recorded licencee was Joseph Thackwray in
1838 and he was followed in the 1840s robert Siccombe, Joseph Shandley, and
Michael Barlow. William Royle took over about 1850 and kept the pub untill
the 1870s. It was known as the Royal Thistle when Joseph Heyworth was there
in the 1870-1880s.

The licensee for several years at the beginning of the 20th century was
Thomas loftus. The pub was bought by Groves & Whitnall and later tenants
James Handley in the 1920-30s and Herbert Wilson from the 1940s untill the
pub closed in 1957. The Royal Thistle was included in the St Matthias No.2
clearance area.
