Gillian Report 2 May 2008 20:29

I am trying to find my grandmother, I don't know anything about her, only her name. In 1921 she was living in Silver street Newcastle upon Tyne and had a son James (my father). My father was brought up in an orphange but, we don't know why. Would dearly love to know if she had any relatives or anything about her.

Feel like I am the orphan, so would like any information no matter how small

Is this likely to be your father's birth registration??

Births Mar 1921 (>99%)
Anderson James (mothers maiden name Anderson) Easington 10a 1016

I'm assuming that May was an unmarried mother?

Although not impossible, the May's already posted in 1907/1908 would only be 13/14 when your father was born.

Unfortunately there are a few possible births for May Anderson, assuming she was born in Co Durham.

I sent Gillian a message a few days ago because she hadn't replied to a recent post and I think she has only just realised how to respond.

Have sent another message this evening advising her of these replies but she hasn't opened it as yet.......it is Saturday night after all!!!

Don't give up on her yet! Cx

All thank you for the replies. Sorry I don't get to stay long on my computer. I don't know if any of the May Anderson's you have listed are the one I am looking for as all I know of her is her name and where she was living in Februrary 1921. My father was an orphan. Around 57 years ago my Mother wrote to an orphange in Newcastle upon Tyne, the only thing is now adays she doesn't remember where it was or what it was called, all she remembers is that they said my Father's, Mother's name was May. No Father known and as far as they were aware no brothers or sisters. I have tried many avenues without success. I went to St Catherines some years back and ended up with a birthcertificate which I believe could be my Father's, but not 100% certain. My Father did not know his Mother or any thing about her. I have tried many avenues as I say but keep having no luck.

Hi Gillian

Have found a birth registration that is much more likely to be your father's

Births Mar 1921 (>99%)
Anderson James Anderson Newcastle T. 10b 209

Would you be able to post the details here of the birth certificate that you think may be your father's? We can see if it tallies up with the above entry.

Was your father placed in an orphanage from birth?

I can't see a death for a May Anderson soon after his birth
- in fact there are no deaths for a May Anderson in Northumberland at all from 1921 to 1928 and even the May that died in 1928 was an infant.

There is a marriage for a May Anderson in Newcastle five years after the birth of your father

Marriages Jun 1926 (>99%)
Anderson May Hawkridge Newcastle T 10b 6
Hawkridge Samuel Anderson Newcastle T. 10b 6

On the birth certificate it say's he was born 14th February 1921 in a Lying-in hospital. It gives his name as James, Boy, no name of father, Mother's name May Anderson General Hawker of 11 Silver Street Newcastle. His Mother registered him on the 18th February 1921. As I said in my last reply, all I had to go on is his mother name mainly, and that he was born in the Newcastle upon Tyne area. I don't know how old he was or why he went into the orphange. I have tried following up from the fact about May being a general hawker, but drew a blank as there are no records serviving. The Lying in hospital records are no more for 1921. Like I said keep trying all avenues but keep drawing a blank.

Hi Ninja Lady
I don't know how to post the certificate here. I don't know when, why or at what age my dad went into the orphanage, only that he was young and had only memories of the orphanage. I don't know where in Newcastle he was born, all I know is: my mum wrote to some where in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1953, but she cannot remember where it was she wrote to. She did say that when they replied, they said that my father's, mother's name was May Anderson, no father recorded and as far as they were aware no siblings. He ended up in London, why and at what age I don't know, (didn't think to ask when he was alive). Hind sight is always good afterwards. lol We always celebrated his birthday on 14th June, but on the birth certificate I have it is 14th February 1921, born in a laying-in hospital. His mother was living at 11 Silver Street in Newcastle upon Tyne in the All Saints district. Her profession is listed as a General Hawker. Like I say not sure that it is my father's birth certificate. Every time I try opening a door it closing in my face. Feel like I'm knocking my head agaist a brick wall. There is one thing, my mum said that my father always went on about a brother and sister (no relation to him) named Jenny and Clark Murry, (not sure that is how they would have spelt ther names).
