hi, this might sound a bit stupid, but i have to ask this question.
having just learned how to fully make use of familysearch i.g.i. batch numbers how sure can you be that the relations that show up are ancestors i.e.
uncles aunts granparents.
regards
debbie

If its a Submitted Record be careful and check, check, check the information.

However, an Extracted Record has a good chance of being accurate. Even so, check the information.

Many of us use the IGI a lot, but use it as a pointer to the real information. After all, there is nothing quite like looking at the source document.

Me again.

If you go to the Tips Board you will see a lot of great advice on using the IGI

Happy hunting

Its possible. Try clicking on Pedigree, this will build a tree for you and will confirm either way

Sorry, must go to pick up my wife from the station

Deborah, same surnames in the same batch stand a chance of being related, but not necessarily. As Robert said, you need to get further evidence, dont just assume they are related. Check the census if possible to confirm details. Or if before census, you would need to find other evidence, baptisms to same parents etc.

Good luck

ok thanks robert,
i have just learned how to do batch numbers and it's fantastic, still not found my brick wall's baptisim or birth or parents, i know everything else about him but that.
if any one reads this would it be a problem to put type up on the board how i have been doing it, it might help other people

The batch # is tied to a particular parish register, so people with the same name are people who have been married (alt christened) in the same parish in the same block of time. In a lightly populated parish, the block could last for decades, but in, say Shoreditch, it might just last a few years (then we're onto a new batch #, typically just differing in the last digit).
So are all the children born to John Smith + Mary in St Leonards, Shoreditch in 1820 +/- 5 y related - probably not. Are all your John Smith + Mary's kids under c040804 - again probably not -there could well be some in c040803/5, even assuming they didn't latter move to another parish. Even with a more unusual name, say Francis Xavier Smith, all you need is one F X Smith to have 6 sons who all name a son after their dad, and you've go half a dozen Francis Xavier Smith's, probably of very similar ages, and probably living in Shoreditch.
Note that the OPRs dont stop at 1837 in some parishes, so say I've got ggg granpa Frank's 1855 b cert showing s/o John Smith + Mary Brown, born in Poole St and I can find him and his 7 sibs on the census and, most likely, in the GRO index. If I also got exact matching dates from the IGI, I might well be inclined not to fork over fifty quid for their b certs.
