HELP PLEASE! I have hit a brick wall with my search for a Myrtle Maude Edwards [married name Driscoll], my husband's paternal grandmother.
She was born in Wales [most probably south Wales,Caerphilly Glams or Monmouthshire] and I have a date of birth from her marriage certificate as 28/11/1890. She married Jasper John Driscoll from Bristol on 17/09/1921 in Newport Mon, Wales, and they lived variously in Weston super Mare, Somerset, Sidcup and Bromley in Kent. They had two children, Kenneth J. b1921 and Edna Driscoll b1924.
She died on 16/07/1980 in Beckenham. Kent.
Rumour has it that she may have been adopted and that her father [birth or adopted?] was John Edwards, a pit manager who was rather elderly for a father. Another was that she was the first woman to attend Lampeter University?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Many thanks for reading my entry, Liz.

Its a real puzzle - obivously she was not registered as Myrtle Maude Edwards on her birth, as none show up in the freebmd indexes, or ancestry complete images for the birth indexes. (she should have been registered in Dec Q1890 or Mar Q 1891)
There are no census entries, 1891 or 1901, for any Myrtle Edwards born in 1890. If Tracys find, above, is correct, she is not the eldest child so it would be doubtful that she was adopted.
Why do you say "Rumour has it" is the father not listed on her marriage certificate ? Have you looked for a baptism record ? Most people still baptised their children after civil registration, sometimes these mention fathers of illegit children.

This says the first female students at Lampeter were not until 1965.

I have now got a copy of her marriage certificate dated 17/09/1921. Newport Mon. Myrtle Maude Edwards, age 29, from 21 Mill St, Istradyfodng, father John Edwards [retired colliery manager]. Husband Jasper James Driscoll aged 34 from 20 Queens Hill, NEWPORT. Father Jasper JOHN Driscoll deceased. Thanks folks for all your input. I shall follow up the "Denbighshire Maude" . I had seen the listing but assumed that if her father was a colliery-manager and she married a Bristolian that she was a South Walean. It is great to get other people's views and fresh slants on awkward searches.PLEASE keep on sending any further info you may find, I should be really grateful. Many thanks, Liz

Trying to do some math's! If she was 29 when she got married (before her birthday in 1921)so 30 in 1921. which looks like she would have been born November 1891 ,so will only be on the 1901 census. Someone tell me if this looks right!

Hi. I have checked out the witnesses but both are from S Wales around Newport so that doesn't really help a lot, and I can't find mention of them in any family memorabilia. I'll just keep on trying! Liz

Hi LFW, Thanks for the input. I have only recently found out that my grandfather was "adopted" by his grandparents, so it would be an amazing coincidence if my husband's grandmother had also been " adopted" by hers! It certainly would make sense of her "father" being older than normal. I shall certainly pursue this thread especially as he was a colliery manager in the right geographical part of Wales. many thanks. Any more brainwaves greatfully received!! All the best Liz.
