Help needed to find adoption records

Can anyone help I am trying to find the adoption records of my mum (Violet Evelyn New) sister
Jean Sylvia new (mums sure the adoptive parents changed her name)
DOB 15th November 1933 lived 3 Ivy Lane, Wallasey Birkenhead. On Jean's birth certificate it says adopted
I have contacted the Wirral Social Services, where a lovely lady called Maureen checked the records for me, but their records only go back as far as 1940.
I actually live in Reading Berkshire so going to offices to check is hard, I was just hoping someone would know where else I could try in the Wallasey/Birkenhead area to enquire about the adoption records.
Kind Regards
Wendy
