Before any so called Geneologists put their spoke in, the name Gibb goes all the way back to 1066. The name has gone through many spellings and was likely to have been Guibe which was then written as Gybbe. An s was added to become Gybbes and the y changed to an i to become Gibbes. That in turn was shortened to Gibbs. A Scottish section of the family started in the late 1400's and s is not common at the end of a name so it became Gibb. In the mid 17th Century, part of the the Kentish Gibbs also dropped the s, making the name Gibb as well.
