Hi Tracie,
Do you have any idea where in the UK the Pub was? There are several.
My G.Dad was a Robert Moore & his Father who was married to Eliza (Raven)was also Robert.I'm having real problems tracing them 'cause they keep vanishing, they seem to be from the Leamington Spa area but he was in the Navy.If any of this sounds familiar please let me know-I'm going nuts trying to find them! Thanks.
All the best,
Carla

Could it have been the Fortune of War Pub in Smithfield, London, Reputed to be where the Great Fire of London 1666 stopped, demolished in 1910? Not near a beach but close to the River Thames.

P.S. Just found out there's a Fortune of War Pub in Brighton, which is a well known seaside holiday resort in the U.K. Apparently it resembles the upside down hull of a ship. I don't know whether that's inside or outside but it definitely overlooks the beach. Try Googleing it, put The Fortune of War in the search and click on Images. Good Luck.

Found this one on Google (quite near the sea):-

Fortune Of War
187 St Marychurch Rd, Torquay, TQ1 3HP

01803 326272

You could try contacting the present occupants and ask if they have a list of former landlords.

Hi Tracie
I know it has been some time but I thought I would just let you know that I lived in Brighton in the late 50s early 60s and my mum worked in The Fortune of War for a time, I remember it well, it was nothing like it is now it was just a small bar/pub situated underneath the promenade on the beach just down from West Street. It was made to look like an upturned boat much later. I have just spoken to my mum and it was run by Vera and Dave Davenport, but we are pretty sure that it was actually owned by Vera's brother in law Alec Bell Davis who also owned a massive pub called Chattfields on the corner of West Street. We left Brighton c1966 and my mum does not remember anybody called Bob or Betty.
Good luck with your search, Regards Lesley
