Hi Sarah
This is the marriage you wanted

28/11/1890
William Ryan, aged 23, bachelor, gunner artillery, living in St Helier, born in County Clare, Ireland, father John Ryan, labourer
to
Elizabeth Paul, aged 21, spinster, servant, living in St Aubin, born Beaminster, Dorset, father Eli Paul, thatcher

Witnesses Joseph Gilmore and Alice de Gruchy.

married in the Church of St Mary and St Peter (RC - known as the Irish Church)

The reference for that certificate is St Helier register 1889 - 1893, Page 31 but it would cost you £10 and I have copied what it said.

Births
29/11/1891 at La Collette, John Henry son of the above
25/12/1892 at Havre des Pas, Amelia Norah daughter of the above

There were soldiers stationed at a place called Fort Regent which is very close to both addresses

The Kathleen belonged to another Ryan.

Hope this helps

Hi Maria

Do you have any more to go on?

From the Jersey 1881 the most likely family seems to comprise John aged 65, a Greenwich pensioner with his wife Mary and children Mark, James, Ellen, John and Mary. Any other Johns either have no children or are living alone.

May I ask you to look up any Pearce births between 1875 and 1889. Father John Pearce. Jersey.

Hello Angelsong
This is the marriage you were looking for

15th July 1902
George Francis Hamon, aged 23, Tailor's Cutter, living in St Helier, born in St Helier, father Philip Hamon, Tailor.
to
Ellen Hubert, aged 26, living in St Helier, born in St Helier, father Alfred Hubert, Upholsterer.

The witnesses were Alfred Hubert and Ada Hamon and the marriage took place at the Bible Christian Chapel in Great Union Rd, St Helier.

If you want the certificate the reference is June 1901 to Nov 1903 Volume, Page 38.

As both families were of Jersey origin it shouldn't be too difficult for me to work a bit further back if you want.

All the best Pam

Hello Zakko
I have been through all the birth records around 1871 and I can't find any entry for a Schofield being born in Jersey at all.
Sorry

Hi Pam,
please could you have a look for a
Jane Ray born 1840.
The family were living in the Grouville Parish on the 1841 census. On all the other census she says she was born in Jersey. On the 1841 it says england but I haven't found a birth or baptism in England yet!!
Thank you

Hi Pam,

Thankyou for the list of godparents, it is a great help

I will search to see how many of the names are still around in the early census to see if any possible family connections appear.(Time to put my Hercule Poirot hat on).

Thanks to you I feel as though the Channel Islands brick wall is beginning to crumble at last..
This part of my tree has been a long mystery,as Elizabeth (1817) turns up in 1851 in Kent,UK with husband & 2 step?children ,all born in St Helier. But that's another story I wont burden you with..(I've nicnamed them The Paracetamol part of the family)..

Thankyou again Pam,
Regards,
Eunice

Hi Una
Here are the godparents
Mary - mother and father
Elizabeth - William Much and Elizabeth de Gruchy
Thomas - John Arthur and Anne Marquerite Ahier
Esther - Jean Aubert and Esther Romeril
John - Jeand Le Riche and Jeanneton Coutanche
Nancy - George Ennis and Elizabeth Renouf
Philippe - Philippe Coutanche and Marie Bertram
Esther - James Hacquoil and Elizabeth Esnouf
Anne - Thomas Le Cras and Nancy le Cras

Rachel - Henry Hallman and Marie Suzanne Coutanche
Jane - James Le Cras and Jane Coutanche
Peter - Thomas de Grichy and Nancy Le Cras

Eliza - faher and Eliza Collas

While I was looking for the births I noticed other children born to these couple who could be related.

James Le Cras and Jane Coutanche
Thomas Le Cras and Molly Coutanche

We won't give up on Thomas's birth yet just because he wasn't born in St Helier, there are 11 other parishes.

Hi Pam,

I cannot thank you enough for all the information..
How sad it was for the whole family to lose so many children.

Marie is living with surviving son Thomas, aged 31 in 1851-HO/107/2527/81/2,she is then a widow.

So the details of Thomas senior's birthplace & actual year of birth will unfortunately remain unknown.
I would like details of godparents please, maybe they will reveal other family connection clues

On the MC of Elizabeth Jane Much, dated 1864 Middlesex( illegit. daughter of Elizabeth 1817) Father is named as William Much, a baker...

I'm so grateful to you.

Thankyou again,
Eunice

Hello Una

According to St Helier parish records Thomas Le Cras and Marie Coutanche married 2/4/1814. Unfortunately their parents don't get a mention!

There was a Marie Coutanche baptised 18/9/1791, also in St Helier, parents Philippe Coutanche and Elizabeth Renouf, but it would be pure speculation to say that she was yours. I couldn't find a Thomas baptised in St Helier in the right time frame.

I don't think poor Marie had time to draw breath because she actually had 14 children, sadly at least 9 and possibly 10 of them died.

Baptisms
2/12/1814 Mary
14/9/1817 Elizabeth (godfather William Much!)
2/1/1820 Thomas Jean - who may be one of the deaths below as 2 John's were shown
26/5/1821 Esther burial 20/6/1824
4/8/1822 John poss burial 11/11/1823 or 9/4/1824
7/11/1823 Nancy burial 23/6/1824
7/11/1823 Philippe burial 13/6/1824
26/2/1825 Esther Elizabeth
27/4/1826 Anne burial 4/7/1826
12/8/1826 Sophie Charlotte burial 3/9/1827
16/11/1828 Rachel Susanne burial ?/11/1829 1 year
4/7/1830 Peter burial ?/8/1830 - 6 weeks
24/11/1833 Leonore burial ?/1/1834 - 6 weeks
3/5/1835 Eliza burial 21/10/1835 - 6 months

Makes quite depressing reading doesn't it - I know infant mortality was high back then but to lose that many must have been unimaginably awful.

I'll see if I can find anything else out about the family next week. I also have all the names of the godparents if you want them.

In the Register dated 1/8/1891 - 29/12/1892 there is indeed a John Henry and an Amelia Norah, I'll check their exact dates next week, there is also a Kathleen a year or so later which might be worth checking.

All the best

Any help would be much appreciated Pam. Thanks a lot

There are no Schofields at all on the 1871 Jersey census. I will see if I can find the birth of Peter John next time I'm at the Archive.
There were a lot of soldiers stationed here at that time, many of them Irish so it is quite likely that the father was a military man.

Hi Pam,

Thankyou,it's so kind of you
Sorry about the dates, they should read c1793 & marriage 1810-1815.(specs need changing).

Elizabeth LeCras was christened in 1817(from IGI),Thomas was born around 1820,Esther c 1825.& maybe the Marie LeCras that you found yesterday c 1816.
