I am trying to find the birthplace in Scotland of William Anderson who was born in 1896 and died at Alamein in 1944. He was a baker who married Annie Walker Spence in Crieff 1925. Any information gratefully received.

Do you have a copy of the marriage cert from 1925 as the name of his father, and occupation, would be useful

His father was another William Anderson and is "deceased" on the 1925 marriage certificate.

That narrows it down from about 200 to 40 odd on 1901 census

Do you know of any older brothers or sisters?

Scottish marriage certs usually names of both parents

Many thanks. I already knew about the war memorial inscription but had been thrown off the scent of his parents by an entry in the 1901 census for Crieff where a William Anderson is living with his 54 year old grandmother JANET ANDERSON (born Edinburgh) which suggested to me that his parents may have died between 1896 and 1901. The problem was I couldn't trace the death of either.

However, your thought of the Coupar Angus "boarder" being my William Anderson makes sense. I have just downloaded this William Anderson's birth certificate which shows him being illegitimate. Do you know, is "boarder" a euphemism for "foster child" ? I see the couple in the 1901 census have another ‘boarder’, Olive Crammond aged 2.

If he was fostered in 1901 it would tie in with the war memorial inscription that he was the "foster son of ....". Possibly he was fostered as a small child by the Ramsay family and ended up being fostered by the McDonald's. Another avenue to investigate !
