Thank you Jim for that additional information. I am making a note of it all in case it is indeed what I am searching for. On 1901 and 1891 census respectively, Martha has her place of birth as Walton on Trent, Derbyshire and her age as 49 and 37 on these two census returns.

Jim - thank you for that info. I actually found the Ann Betteridge with husband John and grandson on 1881 census, but could not locate John or Martha although they were possibly not married by then. I did consider this and looked on freebmd for a marriage between a John Bettridge and Martha ??? but could not find one !! I will note your findings and try again myself to see if I too can find them in order to get all the info from the census returns. Thank you.

Could be Alice - not sure as yet but will make a note of it just in case. And yes Alice, that 1891 census showing John and Martha is the correct family. Thanks.

I started off looking for Sam Bettridge on 1901 census and found him age 13 b. Stapenhill, Derbyshire living with parents John Bettridge 51 b Measham, Leics and mother Martha plus siblings Jack and Nellie. I was then able to trace John and Martha on 1891 census living Stanpnhill, Burton on Trent with older siblings BUT try as I might I cannot find the family on 1881 or 1871 censuses. I havn't even tried 1861 yet. The 1891 census was mistranscribed as BettERidge instead of BettRidge so I tried the mis-spalling as well, but so far no luck. Would anyone fancy having a look too ? Thanks.
