I am trying to find more information on my great grandfather Albert John Johnson, born 1864 in Staffordshire, the 1901 census has him still living at home with his mother and brother Francis in Longton, Staffordshire, his mother Frances died in 1904 and my grandfather Francis was born in 1906. He must have married Mary (Elizabeth) between 1904 and 1906, I have no record, they also moved to Manchester where my family now live. many thanks Carole Allen (nee Johnson)

Where was the son born? Why do you give 2 possible names for the wife? Why must he have married after his mother died?
Its a very common name, it may be best for you to buy the sons birth certificate for his mothers maiden name and then you can work backwards.

Hi Heather The son Francis(my grandfather) was born in Manchester, family say Alberts wife was Elizabeth but I have found on bmd Mary Elizabeth. The 1901 census has no record of a wife, just his mother, brother and servant (companion for mother) living at the address. Carole

I see mum seems to be what we would think of as aged dementia by the notes in the last column of the 1901.
What have you found on bmd? I thought you hadnt found a marriage?
What are you actually looking for? Do you have all the census info?

Seems to be a huge gap between the kids there but on the image they have Selena under the male column and as a scholar so may be wrong age. Will look 10 years earlier
1861 Still a hefty gap, thinking Frances may be a second wife now Name: Salina Johnson Age: 10 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: John Mother's Name: Francis Gender: Female Where born: Stoke, Staffordshire, England Civil Parish: Longton Ecclesiastical parish: St James Town: Longton County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England

This is confusing and poor image too. John is here, is married and is noted as "brother in law" to Lettice. Yep, John has a wife called Mary Ann. The Jackson girl is the daughter of Lettice and her grandchildren are there. Mary Ann is noted as her sister. The poor little Malkin girl is noted as servant
1851
Name: Celena Johnson Age: 3 Mo Estimated Birth Year: abt 1850 Relation: Daughter Mother's Name: Lettice Gender: Female Where born: Longton, Staffordshire, England Civil Parish: Stoke Upon Trent Ecclesiastical parish: Edensor Town: Longton County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Street address:

Will leave it there as you may already have all this. Waiting for your response.

The gap in the children I think is that John married a Mary and they had Selina(1851 census), next census (1861) he is married to Frances and Selina is 10, Emma 2 and William months old. Dont know what happened to Mary in the 10 years. In the 1901 census the last column states faintly lunacy for Frances, would this have been senile dementia as we know it? John, Frances and Selina are all buried together in a churchyard in Longton ,Staffordshire. many thaks for your info and your message Carole

So I have very little on Albert John Johnson (great grandfather), but plenty on John Johnson great/great grandfather), maybe I wil have to wait for the 1911 census in a couple of years to find my information or ask my aunt in Australia if she knows who holds grandads birth certificate. many thanks again Heather, I take it you enjoy genealogy? how far have you got with your own tree? I still dont understand the bit about you found Mary Elizabeth on bmd?
You can get birth, marriage or death certs by finding the ref on freebmd and then using that to buy a cert for £7 from GRO online.
I dont know how long I shall be doing this probably until Im on the tree as deceased Carole. On one maternal line Im back to the Domesday Book - the Le Strange family who came over with William the Conqueror and became the Actons of Shropshire (took a lot of apprenticeship records and wills that one).
On my dads maternal lines back to 1550 - but on another line of dads Im stuck at 1820 with a William Dixon (Dixson) whose father is John - thats it on the marriage cert in 1848 - there are a number of baptisms in the area for a William father John and theres no way I can work out which as William doent appear on the 1841 with parents.
Its not how far back though, its all the flesh/stories you add on the way. I love wills, I love Old Bailey online (recently found my GGFx2 indicted for murder in 1844, my GGF stabbed by 3 Spanish sailors in 1880 when he went to protect a woman being assaulted, my other GGF as a defendant in a case where he had been conned out of a lot of his production of barrels - he committed suicide 5 years later, bankrupt, I always wondered how it happened and now I know) Yes, its hearing their words in court or on statements thats the exciting bit for me.

I thought somewhere in my records from bmd I found Albert and Marys marriage, could be im getting mixed up, maybe a trait from g/g grandma Frances !! I know my grandfather Francis was born in 1906 and 1904-5 seemed to fit in for their marriage. John Johnson on 1841 census was in prison, hence the reason for moving in with his wifes family, probably shunned by his own....I like to see it as my own 'soap' Your research sounds fascinating, im still in the early stages of mine, but I too find it all very fascinating. Only been researching since last year when my dad died. take care Carole
