lloking to find out the identity of my grand-father,

my dad edward hall was born in stevenson street ,south shields, tyne and wear, on 22nd august 1918.
His birth certificate states no father and is given the surname of his mother hannah hall(nee dennis) She was widowed in 1916, so definatly not her husband john robert hall.Already had another son also john robert .
I believe he was baptised at St Michael and all Angels ,south shields is it possible that a fathers name could be on there
The strange thing is on my parents wedding cert, dated 25th december 1943, it says dads fathers name and occupation as john hall and miner deceased. can anyone help me?
or have i hit the brick wall, and the end of my journey, many thanks
Marguerita Graham (nee Hall)

My G Grandfathers birth certificate had no father on it, yet when he married it had one on their.

Some people would just put a father down on a marriage certificate to save face.

thanks for that, i knew john and hannah married then, they then had 1st son (uncle john) in april 1915. but accordind to the war graves commision john hall died at the somme in july 1916, hence he could not have been my grandfather. even though baptism records say he is and listed currently on active service.. so suppose will never know who he was . will carry on with the rest of the tree though as both my grandmother (paternal) and grandfather(maternal) had unusual middle names.Namely mitchinson and cresswell . thanks again
