Looking for any redords of Arthur Herbert Edwards - born 1883 in Lockwood Victoria ( Australia )
last known of approximately 1906 in Melbourne ( Australia ) After that he disappeared. Worked as a Stevedore on the Port Melbourne Docks so it is possible he fell and drowned or he may have jumped / stowed away on a ship leaving port.
Family tales say that he ran off with ' another woman ' leaving a wife and three adult daughters. May have changed his name - could have gone anywhere,

Can anyone help ??
Thanks
Kathryn

This looks like a marriage for him:

Surname: EDWARDS
Given Names: Arth Herbt
Event: M
Spouse Surname: FULTON
Spouse Gvn Names: Esther Cath
Birth Place: VIC
Year: 1902
Reg. Number: 2371

They did indeed have 3 daughters. First daughter in 1902 named Elvey Jane in Bendigo (reg 15841), a second named Eveline/Evelyn May in 1904 in Fosterville (reg 3131) and another in Pt Melbourne in 1906 named Mary Catherine (29215).

If they were adults when he left though it must have been after 1925 or so?

Evelyn married Jno STEADMAN in 1924 and died in 1976 aged 72 in Melbourne (reg 2110). Likely marriage for Mary Cath to Wm Robert BUTLER in 1924; he died aged 36 in 1942. She must have remarried as she died as COLLINS in 1984 aged 77 (reg 10252). No sign of Elvey.

Here is Esther's death, as EDWARDS, quite young:

Surname: EDWARDS
Given Names: Esther Catherine
Father: Fulton James
Mother: Jane WALKER
Death Place: MELB S
Age: 44
Year: 1931
Reg Number: 6280
Event: D

Perhaps he left *after* his wife died?

Birth for Esther Catherine to James FULTON & Jane WALKER in Colac in 1884 (reg 8350).

I wonder if he died in Ashfield district NSW in 1951, death reg as Arthur Herbert EDWARDS, parents shown as Wm & Emma (reg 10274). Mother's name is correct, father's may be informant error?

???

Hi Susan

I have the bdm discs for Victoria, also use www.naa.gov.au for service records and later immigration stuff. Ryerson Index (www.ryersonindex.org) is often useful for death notices and funeral notices, mostly NSW and Qld post c1970.

I know that Esther died in 1931, but they must have whipped her off the electoral roll very quickly, as I could not find a record her either her nor for Arthur in 1931.

In NSW..............

Australian Electoral Rolls, 1901-1936 about Arthur Herbert Edwards

Gender: Male
Electoral Year: 1930 <<<< & 1936
State: New South Wales
District: Cook

If you contact the NSW State Library, I'm sure that they have a 'look-up' service. They could possibly check earlier electoral rolls to see if this Arthur Hertbert is in NSW, which would elliminate him as 'yours'

Can not find any "Elvey Jane", with any surname on the rolls for any state.
Either she has changed her name (shortened, or goes by Jane only)
OR she has died before reaching registration age. ? ? ?

hi Julie,

Thanks so much for the trouble you have been to. Have been so intent on finding the parentage of the said John that I have overlooked details of Elvey. She was the older of the three daughters of Esther and Aruthur Edwards. She was born Elvey Janet but was known thru the family as Elsie Jane - don't know why. She became Mrs. Stark. I have most of her details. Many thanks for your input, I appreciate it very much.

many thanks for your input - I had most of this though certainly not all, as this is a side branch of the family. Still one can never have too much information as there is always a chance of picking up clues to others.

Thanks once again
Kathryn
