Thanks both. Might have to get the Leeds birth certificates just to see - but it would seem to be a long move for an adoption in those days.

No official adoption before 1927

My mother-in-law's father, above name, born on 14 August 1910 and died December 1991. He was adopted to a family called Passant/Passent - but never took their name, so his name is his name at birth but he never had a birth certificate and only knew that his father was a policeman. Obviously all above is family info. As he was adopted is it possible to track down a birth certificate? The family are from the Birmingham area.
