Most likely Elizabeth included him, thinking she should, although he was not actually there at the time he was her "head of household" !

It happens quite often

Yes it happens regularly that people ar included on two entries, especially where he/she is in service.

Does he have the same occupation in both entries? Is the wife's name correct?
Wife could simply have included her husband ..or a neighbour could have said ..oh and Charles and Elizabeth live there....

Yes, certainly - I have several relatives who had performed the same 'trick' - once at work and one at home, or once at home and once at grandparentss etc.

Definitely NOT unusual !!

My 3x great grandad was Charles William Ward, born 1873 in Little Canfield, Essex.

In 1901, he is married to my 3x great grandmother Elizabeth Antonia Burton, living in cheshunt, Hertfordshire.

BUT!

Charles also appears in Chatham, Kent in 1901 in the barracks. We know it is definatly him as we have records of him being there in 1901 and he moved from Hertfordshrie to Kent.

Could the census have been taken on different days so he could have moved?
