The workhouse was seen as the last resort. It meant the family would be split up and mother and children would not see each other. Conditions were harsh and food poor. It could be that they didn't go to local towns as people might know them and hear of their misfortune.

Hi
Andy

Yes its the right family
Clara Robert & Thomas are step Children form
Charles first marriage

Maria was born in Westbury on Severn Gloucestershire and a large family
just cannot understand why they should go to Southampton and not a Gloucester or forset of Dean workhouse (i know Ross-on-Wye also had a work house)

Could this be the family in 1891? Correct ages for Maria and Mary. There are many reasons why the family moved. If she is a widow and had no local family to help, it might have been either move to large town to find whatever work she could or go into the workhouse.

Hi
thanks

yes they got married ~ found marriage~etc

but husband is not on te 1901 census so i think he died ~he was older then her as he was married before~

I guess it was work but that wondered if any one knew about Lime Street as most of the people on the census were boarders

but it does not look like a workhouse if you see what i mean

Hi
its my first time on these boards so please go lightly

Trying to find a 3 x G grandmother on the 1901 census with no luck ~not where she should have been~

so i looked for a child Mary Green b.1890 ~i know not the most uncommon name~

but up they popped in Southampton Lime St
Maria Green ~widow worker Laundress
with Mary Green 10 & Lily Green 3
all classed as boarders
i am 99% they are who i am looking for

most of the pepole in the houses near all seam to be boarders

My question is
can anyone shed any light on Lime Street Southampton and why would they move from GLOUCESTERHIRE with loads of family

Thanks for any help
Ann
