JOHN ALFRED MARTIN (who was renamed JONES at about 10 years old)

THANK YOU ALL so very much for all the help and information you have tried to find for me.

The information so far, is all correct. Lucy Martin (mother of John Alfred) was born in Bognor, Sussex around 1833.....she married William Cribb in 1872. By this time, John's name had been changed to Jones.

My grandfather John Alfred JONES (born MARTIN) was definitely born in 1861 in Frindsbury, Strood, Kent.....and the information is correct that you printed of the census, where he later married my grandmother Emily (nee LINES) who was born in St. Albans, Hertfordshire in 1875.

I don't have any evidence of John Jones marriage to my grandmother, or of his previous marriage to his first wife (don't even know her name). I only know the names of John Alfred Jones three daughters that he took into his marriage with my grandmother.... Lilian 1897, Daisy 1895 and Rose 1898.

Evidence of either of the two marriages is a complete mystery to me ! Will they ever come to light ?

In case you haven't noticed, just to confuse everything, BOTH sides of my family are Martin !

I have checked the freebmd for the names of the children brought into the marriage of John and Emily

According to the dates Daisy 1895/Lilian 1897 and Rose E 1898

There is a birth registration for Camberwell for each one.

I am not sure if you would get any more info by applying for the birth of one of Johns (first wifes??) children.

If you reply on this thread people will be able to be kept updated and may be able to help you further.

I can only find this marriage for a William Cribb to Martin (her name is Catherine not Lucy) it is in 1866 have you got the marriage cert for the marriage in 1872 how do you know this date.

I am trying to find details of my grandfather who was born John Alfred MARTIN, but by the time he was about 10 years old, his name was changed to JONES.

He was born 14th February 1861 in Frindsbury, Strood, Kent. He was illegitimate. His mother's name was Lucy Martin, born 1833. She also had an illegitimate daughter called Lucy, born in Bermondsey, London in 1851.

Lucy married a William Cribb on 24th November 1872. By this time, my grandfather's name had been changed to Jones.
