Find Ancestors

Desperately trying to get info to confirm family.

Grandad - Douglas Lister Robertson born 1910 (Pollockshields,Glasgow ??) died approx 1983 in Torremolinos, Spain.
Married Doris Maude Bell 2nd Oct 1937 - they had two son's (one of them is my dad - but we don't have any contact)

My Great Grandad (as shown on Douglas's marriage cert) John Churchman Robertson (deceased prior to 1937) - I can't seem to find anything on him - would love to know more about him, his wife (my Gt Nan) and any other relatives and links to Scotland.

Okay, well, we're lucky: my Ancestry sub expired last week but they haven't cut me off yet (I'm waiting, so I can then bargain on renewal price), and I'm at a bit of a loose end. ;)

So I'm reading the untranscribed marriage index for the period prior to Jan 1939. And I'm assuming you don't have Ancestry access to do this yourself!! We will just hope that Ms. Bell hadn't been previously married (i.e. didn't marry as Bell).

A Dorothy Robertson married a Bell in 1938-3 ...

For good measure, checked your father:

Again -- getting the birth cert would get the mother's *full* name, making it possible to find *her* birth etc. That's info that *could* help in finding the father.

I'm also looking through the lists of Robertson marriages for any marriage to a Bell, in case Douglas wasn't his formal first name, e.g.

Get that certificate and you will have his age, his full name and his father's name; ditto for Ms. Bell. Finding his birth and/or his parents' marriage might then be relatively easy. You need that certificate.

I'd wondered whether he might have married while in the service and stationed in England from somewhere else, i.e. born in Canada or the US or some such. But the marriage was before WWII, so that's unlikely.

Married in 1937, he would have had to be born before 1920. There are still untranscribed bits for that period at FreeBMD.

Okay, let me find Ms. Bell's name -- I'll look at the image for that quarter for Bell and find the one married to Robertson.

... And of course there are three pages' worth of Bells. Here I go ...

Doris M. Bell is a common name. Two married in that quarter alone, along with a Doris and two Doris E.s.

... and there were 20 Doris M. Bells born in England between 1912 and 1918. Even with the marriage certificate, you'll probably have to order up a few frogs before you get the prince. With her father's name you might find her parents' marriage and at least know what area to be looking in (she may not have been born in London, of course).

Among those 1912-1918 Doris M. Bells there are 3 born in West Ham (1 is in 1919) and 1 born in Willesden. The others are all outside the London area.

For Douglas L. Robertsons born 1909-1919, there are just two:

Douglas L Robertson 1912 Jan-Feb-Mar Taylor West Derby Lancashire

From 1900 to 1913 there are a dozen or so Robertson-Knight marriages (way more Robertson-Taylor marriages).
