Does this explain why I could never find Jane, born as Ward? Thank you to each and everyone. I will send for the marriage certificate.

The 1901 census says that Jane was born in 1864 in Liverpool. There are two records that fit this:-

Births Jun 1863
WARD Jane Liverpool 8b 175

Births Mar 1864 (>99%)
WARD Jane Liverpool 8b 236

so you really need to buy the marriage cert.
