Margaret - thanks I had found them in the 1871 Census and yes, Julia was born in Poole in 1856 same place as Mariah who was born their in 1836. Whether she was born before or after Samuel & Mariah married i don't know as I haven't found their marriage record. I'd rather assumed that they married in Dorset in the early to mid 1850s, had Julia in 1856 and then moved to Southampton before having Susan in 1861.

Monk - i didn't have the 1851 census information, the site I subscribe to doesn't have the 1851 census on it yet. So thanks for that information, it looks like a promising lead.

For info: the family is transcribed Brawn on the 1871 census.
Was Julia a daughter of Mariah born before marriage? She's 15 born Poole, same as mother.

My great grandfather was Francis Brown (c1864) from Southampton. I know from his marriage certificate that his father was Samuel Brown.

In 1871 a Samuel Brown (c1830) born in Somerset and his wife Mariah (1836) born in Poole are living in Oriental Terrace, Southampton with children Julia (1856), Susan (1861), Frank (1864), William (1866), George (1868) and Eliza (1871).

In 1881 Samuel & Maria are at 7 Lower Back of the Walls, Southampton Holy Road. Children Susan, William, George and Eliza are still part of the household plus Samuel (1873) and Harriet (1877).

I cannot find Samuel or Maria or their youngest children Harriet & Samuel in the 1891 or 1901 census'

I cannot find Samuel or Maria in Census' before 1871.

Does anyoone know of this family or provide any clues or suggestions to assist me with filling in the gaps?

Thanks

Stephen Brown
