HELP re Passenger list

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I have just been browsing on Ancestry. I already know that my Grandfather Lemuel William Hampson was on a passenger list in 1901 heading for Philladelpia. But then I see on an updated passenger list another Lemuel William Hampson arriving in Quebec in 1920 stating his birth as 1883, which is the same date of birth as my grandad Lemuel William Hampson. Having looked on BMD I can only find one D.O.B for a Lemuel William Hampson and that is in 1883 Ecclesall Bierlow my Grandad. He died in 1917 Sheffield.
I really don't know what to think who is this other Lemuel, could he have given a false name.

Might he have returned to the UK from USA and then gone out to Canada?

I cannot view Canadian passenger lists, but someone on Ancestry has
Lemuel William Hampson
1883, Sheffield, Yorkshire
with no death. Perhaps this is the Lemuel.

Someone named Maureen.

This Lemuel's parents were Richard and Emma.

John Report 13 Nov 2008 23:44

Hi Lisa
Thank you. I do know Maureen and we are in contact. Yes these are the parents of my Lemuel William Hampson

I have looked everywhere to a birth find this other Lemuel William Hampson, but no birth in England yet he left Liverpool and travelled with a Bella Hampson age 21 but it is also the age that baffles me for he is the same age as my Lemuel

Not knowing that part of England very well (most of my ancestors were from Sussex Surrey, Essex) I thought Sheffield was a different birthplace than Ecclesall Bierlow.

Now looking at the birthplace again, I do remember seeing Ecclesall for my one Sheffield ancestor. Sorry for the confusion.

If he is going to Quebec, he could have been born in Canada. (But, I don't see him on the 1901 or 1911 Canada census.)

I know a few American friends who had ancestors born here, but travelled to the UK, and then returned.

Thank you for looking that information up, do you have BMD for Canada ?

Canadian provinces each keep their own records. Ontario, British Columbia and I believe one other province have limited records online. The other provinces, especially Quebec, are difficult to search (online). I will think of sites for you and post them here in a minute. FYI: Recent Canadian records are not available. Unfortunately, Canada has strict laws about privacy.

Ontario BMD, I believe up to 1923. Note: most of my ancestors are not listed here; so I wouldn't count on this site.

Doing my Hampson family has been a nightmare for it took me 2 yrs to find my Lemuel William and his father Richard, in 1871 , I found Richard had gone to Canada but returned by 1881. Another mystery is Aaron a younger brother of Richard, he was with his wife in the 1881 census from then there is no sign of them

John

John Report 14 Nov 2008 00:07

I was out in Ontario in July and never thought to look up the Hampson name, wished I had now.

It sounds like there really could be a connection to this other Lemuel.

You might try some of the sites above, especially to find Aaron. The collectionscanada site has WWI records.

(You might want to remove your personal information. A lot of people can view this.)

I know the feeling about wishing you had done research...I was born in Ontario and only did limited research when I would go back for visits. Hence the reason why I have accumulated a lot of Ontario websites. ;)

John Report 14 Nov 2008 00:30

Thankyou Lisa
I have removed my personal information
What I just can't understand is, there is no other birth or marriage for a Lemuel william Hampson other than my Grandad. hence why I think whoever it was could have used a false name. Grandad having died in 1917 and the other Lemuel travelled in 1920. Lemuel is an unusual name without the William being added to it.

Hi Lisa
See you live in California, I have family and many many friends out there although they are gradually moving out to other states.

Lisa J in California

Lisa J in California Report 14 Nov 2008 00:38

I tried googling Lemuel Hampson; not a very common name, indeed.

Parts of California are beautiful, but it's quite expensive to live here. We live in a small town (compared to the cities surrounding us), so I love my town, but it is quite fast-paced here. :( I wish we could move, but at this time, we cannot.

I've posted a few sites for you to check (see previous page, please). I will continue to think of other things to try.
