Ann Bignall's children

In the 1871 census for St Botolph Lincolnshire (RG10 /3370/ 7 )

John Metcalf 56, unmarried,Tanner, born Partney, Lincs
Ann Bignall 33, unmarried, Housekeeper, born Paulersperry, Northants
Ann M Bignall 8, daughter, born Lincoln
Charles M Bignall 1, son, born Lincoln

John Medcalf (correct spelling) states that he is unmarried but has in fact been widowed twice)

Ann Bignall died 2 years after this census and her death certificate states that she is Ann Bignall Medcalf, wife of John Medcalf though I've never found a record of their marriage.

I have found no birth registration for either of the two Bignall children and have no idea what happened to them after 1871.
I think that there is a possibility that one or both children are the children of John Medcalf.
I have traced John Medcalf through a further marriage and up to his death in about 1895 but the children never re-appear.
Can anyone find anything at all on the young Ann and Charles Bignall
All help appreciated, thank you.

Do you think the M stood for Medcalf?

I've often thought myself...was the Medcalf added because they were Medcalf children or was it an attempt to appear respectable ?
