this throws the cat amonst the pidgeons for me whith names

i thought she may have been married before as my dads oldest brother was born 2 years before my gran got married in 1930

my grans birth day was 21 0ct 1911 northumberland area

It doesn't seem right that she has a different name on the divorce papers to the name on your father's birth certificate.

Are you sure you have the correct divorce papers? Where did you find the record of them?

Have you tried getting the birth certificate of your father's older brother who she had before her marriage to your grandfather, just to see what the name is on there?

This is the only birth I can find (right qtr. but different year):-

Year of Registration: 1915
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's Maiden Name: Mowbray

This is the only birth I can find with the surname Warneford:-

Mother's Maiden Name: Campbell
District: Gateshead
County: Durham, Tyne and Wear

This is the older brother's birth:-

Ernest F. A. Warneford, mother's maiden name Warneford
March qtr. 1928, Newcastle T., 10b, 195

So it looks as if her maiden name WAS Warneford.

I wonder if at the time of her divorce she was living with another man and using his name, so they have put that on the divorce paper as well as her married name of Nixon?

Does the divorce paper have a date on it (it should)?

I can't understand why the divorce paper describes her as "spinster".

I have my parents divorce papers and the word "spinster" is not mentioned anywhere.

If you had sent away for the divorce documents I would have been tempted to say you had the wrong couple, but since you have the original papers they must belong to your grandparents so I really can't understand the different name on them.

I've looked at the divorce paper and I can see now why they said "spinster". They were saying that she was Lilian Nixon, then Alderson at the time of the marriage.

Can't understand it at all unless she was married for a short period between having her first son and marrying your granddad and then changing back to her maiden name for that marriage.

Have you looked for a marriage between Lilian Warneford and a Mr. Alderson?

If she wasn't married before then I just can't explain the name difference.

UPDATE - Having noted the marriage date given on the divorce paper, I looked at the marriage index and her name is recorded in the marriage index as Lilian Alderson. Strange!!!!!

There is also no marriage of a Lilian Warneford to someone called Alderson between the birth of her first child and the marriage to Mr. Nixon.

Do you actually have your grandparent's marriage certificate? It might be worth getting to see who she names as her father (what his surname is) and what age she is.

The reference for the marriage certificate is:-

Lilian Alderson, spouse Joseph Nixon
Dec. qtr. 1930, Newcastle T., 10b, 203

I can't find a birth of Ronnie/Ronald Nixon in 1933 or 1934 with mother's maiden name either Warneford or Alderson.
