Hi,

I am new to the message boards today !

I am trying to find out some information on an Alfred Edwards, who was a " licensed publican / victualler " and resided at 14, Bilston Street, Sedgley in 1901. He is on the 1901 census, married to a Isabella Edwards ( nee Cooper ) and they had 2 children, Isabella and Florrie at that time.

If anybody could tell me how to find out more information on the pub / pubs in the local area in 1901 and how I could maybe access publicans details, I would be most grateful. I don't know the area well but live In Tamworth so distance isn't a problem.

Many Thanks.

Julie

Hi Julie - welcome to the boards - I'm useless on "recent" look ups but there are plenty on here who are excellent, so I am sure you will get some assistance. Do you know the name of the pub he ran?

Hi Ann,

Thanks for your reply.

No, I don't know the name of the pub. I know very little, unfortunately. However, I am finding out more as I continue to search, which may be useful.

Many Thanks.

I've been talking to my Mom who was born and brought up in Sedgley and she is almost certain it was The Bulls Head. Lots of info about Sedgley pubs on the Sedgley manor website.
Good luck with your search.

Thanks to all who have replied for their help. You have given me some good links, so thankyou.

Carolyn,

Thankyou so much for your information. I spent some time last night looking into it and it does look very possible. I was presuming that they lived on the pub premises but that may not be the case.

If your mum manages to remember anything else, I would be so grateful to know. She must be a good age now.

Alfred and Isabella Edwards are my great grandparents so this is very close to my heart.

Many Thanks.

Julie

Hi Julie

My ggrandfather was also lived in Bilston Street but in 1881. I had a search around and found this site.

http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/articles/BilstonStreet/BilstonStreet.htm

Although the photos were taken in the 1970s there are quite a few pubs, if you do find out what the name of the pub was called you may also have a photo of it from this site.

Regards Lynne
