Jill ,
Thanks very much for you input .
My nan [ his wife ] reg his death 27th Sep and they married 20th Aug . The thing that bugs me is my nan was born Oct 1901 yet she was 19 on the cert .

I am just wondering if it may be better to hold out for the 1911 census since it's due to come out 2009 or am i wrong in thinking this and its not till 2012

Year of birth will depend on when his birthday was.

You don't give exact dates of wedding or death but if, say, he married on 2 Aug 1921 - it might have been his birthday that day, the day before, or the day after giving possible timespan of 3 Aug 1899 to 1 Aug 1901.

Same is true of his death - could be from say 3 Sep 1899 to 1Sep 1901. Taking both together narrows the timespan a bit - say 3 Sep 1899 to 1 Aug 1901. (You can adjust the actual dates).

This assumes he did not lie on his marriage and whoever registered his death knew his age to be accurate.

But it looks like nearly 3 years to search. Also, it might be possible that he would not show on the 1901 census ...

Sorry - not trying to be depressing just don't want you to narrow it down too much too quickly and miss him.

Jill Thanks for that .
I have looked on the 1901 census but can,t seem to find any Alfred with a father John born at the right time .
I was thinking the same thing about the witnesses as it is more than likely or it could be Alfred's brother and wife .

Mabel's father died in 1913 but her mother was still alive until 1928.

I am trying to narrow his birth down as much as possible as there are a lot of Alfred Hill's born about that time and to get them all before i got the right one will cost a fortune .

If he was 21 when he married in August 1921 and 41 when he died in Sept 1941 would he have been born 1901 or 1900.?

Forgot to say on marriage cert father is a ship yard Labourer and Alfred was living at Angus Buildings Walker .

I'm working on an assumption that John J Hill and Florrie Hill were his mum and dad: (I know assumptions are dangerous but bear with me here)

So - there's this:

Births Dec 1901 (>99%)
Hill Alfred Leicester 7a 206 Scan available - click to view

And there's this:

Marriages Dec 1900 (>99%)
Booth Walter Leicester 7a 548 Scan available - click to view
Hill John James Leicester 7a 548 Scan available - click to view
James Florence Leicester 7a 548 Scan available - click to view
Warner Emma Leicester 7a 548 Scan available - click to view

Of course this could be complete rubbish but ...

His marriage cert should give his father's name and occupation - that would help in finding him in the 1901 census.

Just noticed his father's name in your post (duh!). What was his dad's occupation?
