Hi, we're trying to find information on Florence Brown and her daughter Iris Brown.

Florence died in the mid 80's over 93 years of age. All we know is she had a daughter (my grandmother) Iris, born 25/5/1928. My Dad says they were from Heanor, Derbyshire and moved to Nottingham.

Florence was said to have had 3 husbands. I've found some stuff on here but can't be sure of any of it.

Thanks

Was Florence unmarried when she produced Iris?

What was Florence's surname when she died?

Sam

Sam Report 16 Dec 2008 15:21

Is Brown Florence's maiden name or married name? There isn't an Iris Brown birth registered in 1928 in Derbyshire.

Do you have Iris's birth certificate and therefore the full names of both parents?

Yeah that's what I don't get, we know for a fact that's her birthday but no births in Derby or Nottingham.

Her surname was Brown when she died. Brown couldn't have been Florence's maiden name though because of other marriages.

So I wonder if Brown wasn't Iris' real maiden name? If it was changed along with a new marriage? Iris' son was born in 1954 so he wouldn't have known of any marriages before that.

I hope this makes some kind of sense to you cos it's confusing me.

I wasn't expecting such quick replies, thanks. I'm going round my grans soon to hunt for some certificates, if I find anything I'll get back to you with more info.

"Her surname was Brown when she died" - Do you mean Iris or Florence? Either way, if both ladies married at some point then Iris's birth won't be registered under Brown.

What was Iris's son called and where was he born? The birth index will show Iris's maiden name.

Let us have just two facts, please.

The name of the person who died in the mid-80's....................what was it?

And where was the death registered?

Daniel

Daniel Report 16 Dec 2008 15:48

I meant Florence. Her surname when she died in the mid 80's was Brown. She was in her late 90's.

Iris married my grandfather Ronald Lee in 1948. They had a son (my father) Paul Lee in 1954 in Nottingham. Though some information is down as Basford (area of Notts.)

I'm kinda new to this so sorry if I miss stuff out etc or confuse.

Thanks

Sam

Do you have a copy of Ronald and Iris's marriage certificate? That should tell you any previous names that Iris may have had.

Ronald Lee married Iris Brown q2 1948 - Basford 3c 206

WHERE did she die?????

Have you got the cert? If not, you need it...........her maiden name should be recorded, assuming the informant knew what it was...................

Ericthered

Ericthered Report 16 Dec 2008 16:04

Was/is your father Paul R Lee? Birth registered JFM 1954?

If so MMN was recorded as being Brown.

Is Iris Lee still alive?

If not....when and WHERE did she die?

Daniel

Daniel Report 16 Dec 2008 16:19

Yeah that's my father, Paul R Lee. And we know that's there marriage information. Thanks :)

Yes, Iris is still alive, she's got dementia now so it's difficult finding out from her.

I believe Florence died in Nottingham.

We just seem to be hitting a wall when it comes to finding who Florence married and who her ancestors before her were. Plus the fact there is no Iris Brown on here for April 1928 births.

Thanks

Sam

Sam Report 16 Dec 2008 16:23

Maybe Iris wasn't born as a Brown. If Florence was married to someone else when she gave birth to Iris and then remarried afterwards, Iris could have taken the name of her stepfather.

If you get a copy of Iris's marriage certificate it will name her father which will hopefully not be a Mr Brown?

There is no death in Nottinghamshire for Florence Brown aged over 90 between 1984 and 1990.

I think you need to find out with a bit more accuracy when and where she died................unfortunately 'thinking' where (and when) it was does not enable anyone to search with any degree of certainty.

Is there no-one who can tell you?

Daniel

Daniel Report 16 Dec 2008 16:28

Yeah that's exactly what I'm starting to think. I'm gonna go round my grans and look for some kind of help. Thanks.

Ericthered - Yeah I know, if I knew the exact date of death and that I would have said it. All I know is she was in her 90's and died during the 80's, yes it goes on memory so I know its difficult.

Sam from Stoke - My dad's decided to tell me Florence also had the surname Kue. Better late than never I suppose. Thanks for helping mate.

Ericthered Report 16 Dec 2008 16:48

I wasn't asking for an exact date..........just some info alittle less vague than we have had so far.............

Doesn't your father remember where his grandmother died?

This is not idle curiosity.............if we can find the death reg'n, we will have an idea, at least, of when she was born..............

Daniel

Daniel Report 16 Dec 2008 21:56

My mum and dad are useless. I found nothing at my grans because a load of certificates were here.

Florence wasn't born Kew or Brown but WRIGHT! And she died in Feb 1988.
We have certificates for both.

Florence's first husband was Robert Brown, who had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. His parents were James and Amy Brown. All this was found on the census'. It has to be them as they're the only ones from Heanor, Derbyshire. James Brown's father may have been called Henry, I can't read some of the census writing :(

I'm now trying to find information on my grandma's brother, I only JUST found out she had one. All I have to go on is J.W. Brown from his fathers death certificate and he at the time (1956) lived in Derby.

Thank you both for taking your time and helping!

Ericthered

Ericthered Report 16 Dec 2008 22:05

OK.............progress!

What was Florence's DOB? From the death cert..................

J W Brown was not your grandmother's brother......any siblings she may have had would have been named Wright.................

And you haven't told us Florence's father's name.............or how old she was when she married.

We do need all these details if you wish us to help.............
