Boatmen and the census

Does anyone know if those living and working on the canals/waterways were shown on the census?
An ancestor, Thomas Ward was shown as a boatman/waterman on the 61 and 71 census but was living on land at that time. His whole family then disappears on the following 2 census, I read that due to economic downturns at the time, many boatmen took to living on their boats with their families,

Thomas Ward c1810 was shown on the 41 census in warrington. He is then absent in 51 (his wife ann is still there). He returns in 61,71 in barton on irwell. So where was he in 51 ?
