Hi Lynn,

It depends where you are looking for the information. If you are looking at births, marriages and deaths then all you get is the reference numbers that you need to order a certificate. You won't find the full details of what is on a certificate online.

As for saying "oops, can't find record" - which site is saying that, and for what kind of records?

thanks for that kath,, please tell me something, when i do a search it always says oops cant find records, and the records (like my own birth certificate) dont really give much info, do i then have to buy a copy of whatever certificate i need

There is no death for a John C. Evans in 1942, 1943 or 1944 who is anywhere near the right age.

Perhaps he did just do a runner, in which case he could have died anywhere and with such a common name it would be virtually impossible to find without more information.

i was told that he died a year after my dad was born (1941), they lived in stoke on trent, i was told by another family member that he done a runner, so his death wouldnt be registered with my grans, sorry but i grew up in south africa and didnt know my grandparents or any of the history of them, i was just told they were not to close.

There are too many John C. Evans or Clifford J. Evans deaths to be sure of the right one. None registered in Dover.

If the birth in 1910 is the correct Queenie, then this looks like her death:-

Name: Queenie Florence Evans
Birth Date: 4 Apr 1910
Death Registration Month/Year: Feb 1991
Age at death (estimated): 80
Registration district: Dover
Inferred County: Kent
Volume: 16
Page: 1350

Since Queenie is born in London the Hendon marriage looks more likely.

Kathleen can you look for deaths for them both to get the dates of birth?

Lynn,

I have made a mistake. The spouse may not be George W. Evans.

There were two marriages of Powell to Evans . The one in Pontypridd was not yours. I think it has been transcribed wrongly.

There is a Phyllis M. Powell marrying an Evans in Pontypridd
There is a Queenie F. Powell Marrying an Evans in Pontypridd
There is also a Queenie F. Powell marrying a John C. Evans in Hendon.

The Hendon marriage reference is:-

June qtr. 1933, Hendon, 3a, 1100

You will have to decide which Queenie F. Powell marriage to go for.

thank you all so much for that information, i really appreciate it.

I have found your grandparents marriage. This certificate will give you your grandfather's age and his father's name and occupation:-

Queenie F. Powell, spouse Evans
June qtr. 1933, Pontypridd, 11a, 1377

HOWEVER - there is a problem. The spouse is George W. Evans, not John or Clifford.

Queenie Florence Powell 1910 june qt Southwark vol 1d page 78.

So likely we are looking for a marriage 1928 onwards. Not on freebmds. Perhaps some kind soul with full index will look for the marriage

I know this is a long shot but there is this birth of a John C. Evans registered in Bangor which covers Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, if thats the place you mean. He would be about the right age to marry and have six children by 1941.

Name: John C Evans
Year of Registration: 1910
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Bangor
County: Anglesey, Caernarvonshire, Gwynedd
Volume: 11b

i have looked for my grandmothers marriage certificate, as i have all her details, unfortunatley i cant seem to find it in the records, im really stuck with this one, all i know of my grandad, is his name was john clifford evans, or clifford john evans and he was born in wales, (that place with a long name), other that that nothing, i have even asked family members, no one seems to remember anything

First things first - you need your father's birth cert to make sure you have your grandparents' names correctly.

Then, advisably, get your grandparents' marriage cert.

Then, go backwards from there - with a name like John Evans it would be easy to go wrong.

Lynn

I'm afraid a John Evans from Wales is not going to be an easy find - there will be thousands of them.

I've sent Lynn a pm asking her to come back to her thread.

Lynn - if he is your father's father can we assume he has the same surname as your father? In which case, what is his surname?
