Hi Vicky -- first stop for anyone new to genealogy is

http://www.freebmd.org.uk
(Click on the red Search in the lower left)

Births, marriages and deaths, free, starting in 1837 and working its way up to 1983. For births, it's working on the 1920s and into the 1930s now -- transcribing the records in the GRO index so they can be searched on line.

Arnold is in Basford registration district. Searching for birth, Thomas Allen, 1910-1920, Basford reg dist, there are five -- assuming your people were born in Arnold.

But first, the easiest thing to do is find the parents' marriage -- the search goes like this:

marriages
surname Allen
given name William
spouse's given name Rebecca
1900-1920 (just to fire wide)
reg dist Basford (select from list)

No luck.

Are you sure of the spelling of Rebecca's surname? Is it O'Finnity?

Punctuation helps so much.

But searching just for

births
surname Allen
mother's surname *fin*

-- the * stands for anything, so this covers spelling mistakes -- doesn't find anything either.

How about the spelling of Allen?

I'm having no more luck with births and marriages than the others had with the deaths. Are you sure your information is correct?
