Marriage at All Saints Church, St Helier 5/5/1889

George Rust, aged 36, Widower, occupation Labourer, living in St Helier, born Shouldham, Norfolk. Father Stephen Rust, Labourer
to
Alice Jane Le Riche, aged 23, Spinster, occupation Domestic Servant, living in St Helier, born in St Helier. No father
Witnesses John Thomas Carter and Ann Elizabeth Carter.

The marriage entry actually gives George's surname as Picot but we believe it is a transcription error as he has clearly signed his name as Rust and his father's name is also clearly Rust. I would have to look at the original to be sure but I don't think it's nescessary.

It all fits in very nicely with the 1861 census, Class: RG9; Piece: 1258; Folio: 153; Page: 11; GSU roll: 542785.

Alice Jane Le Riche was born at 3, Old St John's Rd, St Helier on 22/7/1865. Her mother was Susan Le Riche and there is no father named. The birth was notified by Francoise Fallaize.
Alice Jane was baptised 10/9/1865 and her godparents were Jean (John) Faudemain and Ann Le Masurier.

Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Hello Annette

I can have a look next week for the marriage. The baptisms of most of their children are on-line at www.jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je, the baptism pages take ages to load so you just to be patient.

Hi,
I'm trying to find the marriage of George Rust and Alice Jane LeRiche in St. Helier some time between 1881 when George was stationed at St. Peter's Barrack's and 1890 when their first child was born.

Please can you help?

Here are the rest of those baptisms. In each case the parents are Charles Benest, son of Francis Benest and Jeanne Grandin. The godparents are quite good for building a picture of Charles' family. All in St Ouen's parish church.

2/5/1819 Charles - godparents Father and Susanne Alexandre, wife of Pierre Benest (This one may have died although I didn't find a burial)

10/6/1821 Jeanne - gp Francis Benest, of St Lawrence, grandfather and Betty Cabot (his 2nd wife)

18/4/1824 Pierre - gp Pierre Benest, son of Francis and Susanne Alexandre his wife, Uncle and Aunt

9/7/1826 Charles - gp Charles Le Maistre and Marie Le Maistre, daughter of Philippe of St Clement

12/5/1831 Jean - gp Jacques Le Brocq and Rachel Vautier, his wife. Burial 23/4/1833, aged 2

2/6/1833 Elizabeth - gp Jean Crill and Elizabeth Benest, his wife. Uncle and Aunt

12/3/1836 Rachel - gp Jacques Le Brocq and Rachel Vautier

14/7/1838 James - gp Jacques Alexandre and Elizabeth Le Maistre his wife. Burial 2/2/1839, aged 6 months.

26/1/1840 James - gp as above

Thank you so much for the info on Thomas Benest.

It makes a change for any of 'my' lot, anywhere , to have any more than the bare bones in parish registers!

No hurry for the siblings info because at least I now know I have the right man for 2x GAunt's LEGITIMATE husband :-O lol

Many thanks again

Thanks Pam
I can't find them on the 1911 census anywhere. I'm fairly sure that they were living in Jersey then but they might have come back for a visit.
Thanks anyway. I suppose if they were renting a property they might not be in the rates book.

Thank you very much for your reply and mentioning the Priaulx Library for family history research - I have just had a look and also googled Guernsey Ancestry and there is a wonderful site containing a huge amount of information plus lots of links. So now I can continue my search for members of my Cleal family. I think they are also still in Jersey.

Many thanks.

Chris

Lucky you - the parish of St Ouen is a joy to research as the records go into lots of detail. For instance

Baptism
21/9/1828 Tom, son of Charles, son of Francis Benest and Jeanne (Jane) Grandin
Godparents Thos. Hubert, son of Philippe of St Helier and Jeanne Le Gresley, wife of Alexandre McDonald and Aunt.
Probably the same Thomas Hubert who's with the family in 1841.

I also noted the baptisms of all Tom's siblings which I'll type up for you later plus a couple who didn't make it as far as 1841.

I'm afraid I don't know anyone who does Guernsey look-ups and I don't think they've got anything on line. There was a member a while back called Sablon who lives in Guernsey but I don't know if she'd be able to help.
The Priaulx Library is the main centre for researching family history.

I've looked through a few of the old Rates books but no sign of them so far. I'll try a few more next time I'm at the Archive.

Hi Pam,

Thanks for your offer.

Do you know if there is also a site for Guernsey look-ups, please?

I have found a relative in the 1841 census for St Peter Port, Guernsey and am looking for further information.

I am assuming that these records are not available in Jersey.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Pam
Thanks for your quick reply.
I know that they were not in England in 1911. I'll do a bit more research to find the last record of them in England.

We (me & other members of the family) are intrigued as to why they left. It seemed an odd thing to do at that time. They had had a back street greengrocers, sold up & left. Tax problems maybe?.

Patricia

All I can think of for this one is to check the parish rates books to see if the they were paying rates on a property which might get you you the address where they were living.
I doubt if I can help with the rest of your queries as there are no records of passengers in and out of Jersey.
Have you found them in 1911? That might give you an indication of when they came to Jersey.

Hi Pam
This is a long shot - my gandparents Edward & Eizabeth Abell (& possibly their son Edward) moved to Jersey about 1910. They bought / rented a house in Gorey. They returned to England (Derby / Nottingham) a few years later as they did not like being so far from their family.
I wonder if it is possible to find when they went to Jersey & when they returned & why they went there in the first place. Also their address in Gorey.
I should appreciate any info.

Hello Astra

I've been through the death registers for all 12 parishes from 1861 to 1871ish and there are no Root deaths at all.

Apparently there was a cholera epidemic in the 1860's which claimed approx 300 lives but according to Archive staff all were certified in the same way as any other death.

Hope you can pass this on to Will
