WELL DONE JANICE

so he died just 11 days after the end of the war

The Royal Defence Corps was formed in August 1917 from the Home Service Garrison Battalions of 18 Regiments. It was made up of old soldiers who were beyond the age set for combatant service, or those who were not fit for duty overseas, sometimes as the result of wounds received on active service. The Corps was similar in some ways to the Home Guard of the Second World War. Its job was to guard railways, tunnels, roads and ports, thus relieving other troops for front line service.

There are over 1000 WW1 deaths for W Jones. None are commemorated at Brookwood on CWGC site. Post-war deaths of WW wounds are commemorated but I forget what the cut-off date for this is - maybe 1920-22ish.
However, the basics of the story don't strike me as improbable. What I'm inclined to believe is he was a soldier (or reservist), and received a military burial, but it was either before or after WW1.

EDIT As Janice post below makes clear, I stuffed up on the search.

Marilyn Report 28 Jan 2009 05:51

My mother tells me that her grandfather Walter Jones died in the war 1918. She also tells me that he is buried at Brookwood in Surrey. Her mother told her that his coffin was covered with the Union Jack at the time of his burial. He was born around 1874 and was married to a Florence(nee. Stubbles). If anyone can find out more info for me I would be yery graetful.
