I see Mary Ann Gritt married in Hampshire.

There is this death in Hampshire which could be a possibility:-

Name: Samuel Harris
Year of Registration: 1844
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Basingstoke
County: Berkshire, Hampshire
Volume: 7
Page: 38

Where did they live? There are lots of Samuel Harris deaths around that time on FreeBMD.

Have you a copy of the marriage cert. of Mary to Joseph, this should state if she was a widow - although she might not have told the truth, if Henry had disappeared. Have you looked for a death on free bmd?

My ancestor Samuel Harris seems to disappear from records around 1844 when my GtGrandfather, Henry Harris, was born. Samuel had 4 children with Mary Ann Gritt - he was a Gypsy chimney sweep - Mary married Joseph Rawlings in 1848 and had more children.
Have been unable to find death certificate for Samuel; can't find records that he was transported; so don't know what happened to him. He might have gone off and used another name, who knows?
