My grandfather Arthur Bryan Evans apparently does not seem to have existed before he joined the army in 1914, at the time he was living with his parents in Gorton Manchester. According to his army papers he was born in Crewe and his father was named James.
Crewe do not have any record of Arthur Evans born in 1893 nor one whos` father was James in the 1890s.In the 1901 census there was a family that fits the bill living in Denton Manchester but my grandfather`s date of birth is 2 years out,his father James is said to have been born in Ellesmere in Shropshire in 1860 but no trace can be found of him.
Arthur married my grandmother in 1915 ,they had 5 children before he died in 1930 at the age of 37
HELP I am really struggling with this Adrienne

It sounds to me it's quite likely that is your arthur in 1901. I see on his death he is known as just Arthur - maybe he was registered as just arthur? Have you checked his marriage cert? It would give his father's occupation. On the 1901 census his father is a general labourer.
