If you can find him on the 1851 and 1861 censuses you should get clues re his place of birth and possibly info on his first wife ...

we know it was york, but then we reach a dead end, even went to york archives but they couldnt help

Have you found him on any of the censuses?

What's his wife's first name and where and when was she born?

we know it was york cos in the later census' he names it as york, yorkshire. the people at the archives centre say that normally if one is not certain of their birthplace they wil just put yorkshire, really want to find out more cos he had such an interesting life.
