The 1911 census has dug up 2 great aunts who were at Barkigside Iford Essex Girls Village homes. Neruda and Mona Oxley
How can I find how long they were there for
whether they we sent abroad in the immigration of children to canada?
Neruda was born 1897 and mona 1896

For Home Children sent to Canada, the Canadian government has a searchable online database:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/001015-100.01-e.php

It isn't complete, especially for later years, but it's worth trying.

I did. There are 17 Oxleys in the database, but no Mona or Neruda.

I would look for them in English records first (which might mean buying a few useless certificates!) before trying abroad. There are some resources for Canada and Australia avaliable on line, e.g. for finding marriages. But in the case of Canada not all provinces are accessible on line, and I think the same is true for Australian states, although generally more info is accessible for Australia than for Canada for the last century.

For info -- was "Neruda" a mistranscription in the 1911?

Births Sep 1896
OXLEY Nerada Florence Tynemouth 10b 228

That's the only entry showing at FreeBMD for OXLEY NER*, though.

Seems more likely NERADA is the mistranscription. There are other Nerudas in the GRO, no other Neradas.

could she have used Florence instead of Neruda in later life????

Hi

As a result of this thread, I recently contacted Barnardos Making Connections to find out more about my orphaned late mother. The paperwork I received last week indicates that there is a two week level of service to perform an initial search costing £15 to see if they can trace the person involved. I was told by them today that once the initial search has been completed, if copies of any identified records are required, the current waiting list is 3 - 6 months (!)

Apparently the increase in search requests has been fuelled by the release of the 1911 census.

It's going to be a very long 6 and a half months but hopefully worth the wait.
