Actually, now that you mention it, Margaret, I knew that, although I didn't realize it -- from enrolment records I'm familiar with, it was the mother, true!

The Sask vital records database doesn't show deaths for Charles or Annie up to 1938.

Yup, that's the 1901 list I got at Ancestry, and the kids whose births are shown there.

Evie, they usually give mother's name as next-of-kin rather than father's unless mother is deceased.

If Annie was next of kin when Robert enlisted, that would likely mean Charles had died.

They must have moved on West after the 1901!

That's certainly the right Robert, I'd say.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 4 Mar 2009 02:59

Here they are in the 1901 at Ancestry (again, no details for me):

Charles Wright
Annie
Ontario, Ottawa (City/Cité), city
dob 1863

And then, searching for Wrights in Ottawa with parents Charles and Annie:

Albert Wright 1885
Rosallis Wright 1886
Robert W Wright 1887
Fred S Wright 1890
Kalie E Wright 1893
Alferd D Wright 1899

Canadian records transcription at Ancestry is notoriously horrible ...

Maybe you can find them at automatedgenealogy using that info.

A Robert William Wright enlisted for WW1 in Val Cartier, Quebec. He was born 1887, Frant, Sussex, England. Next-of-kin, mother, Mrs. C. Wright. Broadview, Saskatchewan. His occupation baker.

Oh dear! A Robert William Wright was killed in the war, 24 May, 1915. Doesn't give any other info but he was in the Saskatchewan Regiment.

Do you have the births in Canada?

I don't subscribe so can't see details. You can still search the database -- if you "guess" a factor right, like parents' names, it will show in the search results.

http://content.ancestry.ca/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8838

searching for

births
father Charles Wright
mother Annie Palmer
1887-1907

Alfred David Wright
date gender
Carleton (county)
Charles Wright
Annie Palmer

Frederick Samuel Wright
date gender
Carleton
Charles Wright
Annie Palmer

Katie Elizabeth Wright
date gender
Carleton
Charles Wright
Annie Palmer

Hopefully, someone with access will give you the details, if you don't have them.

Were they still in Canada in 1901? That census gives year of immigration but I can't find them on it.
