My great grandparents used the man's second christian name as the family name, even on the census, but on bmd certs. used the official surname - very confusing when researching the family! |

thank you for that - you made it very straightforward sounding. it seems the people I am looking at dropped the surname and used the fathers second christian name as the family name. however the oldest child was certainly baptised under the original surname. a bit odd, I can only think he had his reasons! |

If a family changed its surname during the 1930's - 1940's (why I don't know) would they have had to do this legally or could they just start calling themselves the new name? are there indexes of official changes that can be accessed to prove it is them? |
