I am trying to find information about my grandfather, William Thompson, born around 1870. I am not sure where he was born, but I do know that he had quite a few children. He was a widower when her married my mums mother in 1935, although my mother (Dorothy Nellie, was born in 1926 and her brother Eric in 1924. William Thompson was named on the original birth certificate, although it was re registered in 1936 just after William Thompson married my grandmother Sarah Pittam. I would really appreciate any information about the family from anybody who can help. I am not sure where William Thompson originates from, but when he was married to Sarah Pittam he was living in Hampton Court Road, Harborne, Birmingham.

You need to start with the marriage certificate -- you may have it already?

It will give his age at marriage and his father's name (unless you're unlucky). Unfortunately it's such a common name that even with that info he could be slippery.

Do you know when and where he died? The death certificate might give a birthdate.
