Find Ancestors

My G Grandfather (Joseph Hughes b 26/3/1871 and died 30/7/1956) and G Grandmother (Mary Byrne b c1872 and died 10/4/1849) are buried in the same grave as my Grandfather. Also there is my great uncle John Hughes b 2/2/1907 and died 30 Oct 1921. This grave is In Glasnevin Cemetry, Dublin and I have visited and photographed it.

The dates of death for my G Gradparents are taken from death notices in the irish times, and for my G uncle from the grave stone.

I can not find any death certificates for any of these people (which does not really surprise me given that it is Ireland)
My G Grandmother died in Dublin (not sure exactly where) and my G Gradfather died in Ternure.
I can't find anything at all for my G uncle in terms of where.

The family rumour I have been told is that he died playing rugby, but I have searched the irish times around his date of death for an inquest or something and there is nothing there.

Any ides where i could look now ( I have already searched the printed indexes at GROI in Dublin but I may have missed something)

Any help in finding their death certs would be greatfully accepted

Should I read Mary's dod as 10/4/1949, not 1849. If so there should be d.certs for all of them. If they're not at GRO(I), then possibly they didn't die there, but just were buried there. For John, that would just mean Great Britain, but for Joseph and Mary, it would also exclude N.Ireland.

Fiona....A point to note when looking for Deaths/Burials in Ireland. Many Irsh people who died in other parts of the world have their name engraved on the family "Headstone" also others who died in eg.England were and still are taken back home to Ireland for Burial.

mgnv - sorry you are correct Mary's deat of death is 1949.

I know that my g-grandparents definitely died in ireland as I have the death notices from the paper which shows them dying one day, death notice next day and funeral the day after.

Janice - thanks for that - yes that is my g-grandparents in the 1911 census - I had already managed to find that record which confirmed that i had not got any missing g aunts and uncles.
I might have a look at that death certificate and see if it is my uncle - as he may have been sent to a boarding school.

I have a suspicison that my grandfather (who was a solicitor) was supposed to register their deaths and just never got round to it - he ended up being bankrupted and struck off so it would not surprise me if this was the case.

After 1922, Ireland's a bit ambiguous - did they definitely die in the Republic, not N.Ireland - Dublin doesn't have d.certs for N.Ireland after 1922

Following a trip to Ireland last week I applied for G Grandmother and G Gradfathers death certs at a civil registration office.
For 6€ they will do a search for records and only charge a partial fee if the search is not succesful - this is really useful if you have lots of potentials for a person as you can give them a range of 2 or 3 years plus a name and the parents names and you will only get the certificate if it is a definite match.
I have managed to now get a copy of G Grans death but Dublin has confirmed that there is no death cert for G Grandad so it looks like my Gandfather failed in that task :-)

Will look for G Uncle John in Dublin by giving them a ring
