Dea Report 8 May 2009 18:40

Well, I can't yet find a marriage but I believe they did have a child.

Haven't had time to follow it through yet but:

1891:

Lydia Doughty
Age: 4
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1887
Gender: Female
Where born: Cardiff, Wales

Civil Parish: Weston Super Mare
Ecclesiastical parish: Emmanuel
Town: Weston-Super-Mare
County/Island: Somerset
Country: England

Registration district: Axbridge
Sub-registration district: Weston Super Mare
ED, institution, or vessel: 12
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Mary Doughty 62 wid. b Hulton, Somerset.
Lydia Doughty 4 grand-daughter b Cardiff

Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 1920; Folio 62; Page 9; GSU roll: 6097030.
.................................

Birth of the above registered as Lewis,:

Births Mar 1887
LEWIS Lydia Cardiff 11a 293
.............

We know that Lester died in 1885 so he is very unlikely to be the father:

Deaths Dec 1885
Lewis Lester 43 Cardiff 11a 151

BUT, we can presume that Hannah was at that time not married to Thomas Doughty??

Tracing 'grandmother' Mary Doughty back through census, she DID have a son called Thomas
but on 1871 his bob was 1851, so age a few years out.

This needs more work but I believe the first thing to do, as Evie suggests, is to buy Hannah's death cert.

I will look further...

Ah yes, it was late and I was miserably sick - some virus that has lodged itself in my right eye and spread. I was reading through one eye and lost my depth perception - the "Widwr" is the one below Thomas, not Thomas! And I just didn't have the strength left to go looking for Thomas before that, but I figured somebody would by the time I came back. ;)

(And yes, duh, there he is in the list on page one of the thread.)

So yes, it looks like, if anything, it was an informal arrangement, but lasted long enough that they were representing themselves as a couple and she was using his name.

Other than that marriage of Cecelia, I don't see any trace of the kids either.

I would get the death cert, wouldn't you, Dea??

Dea Report 8 May 2009 11:24

Do we know where the children were in 1891? (Of Lester + Hannah?)

Well,

The Thomas Doughty who Janey found on 1891 was, indeed, lodging with Lester + Hannah Lewis in Havelock Street on 1881 - He was, at that time, unmarried!

However, looking at the image on 1891, it looks to me as if he is still 'single' and not a widower???

Aargh, Jane. This is the first you have mentioned Thomas Doughty. Why not offer that to start with??

This death is interesting in that it fits everything you have said:

Deaths Sep 1890
Doughty Hannah 36 Axbridge 5c 311

Hannah, born abt 1854, died in Somerset, surname Doughty.

It's always possible your Hannah partnered with Mr. Doughty without marrying him.

You might want to check out that death and see what the cause of death shown is, and whether there is any other info of interest.

There's no Hannah Doughty to match that info in the 1881 census.

But here's an interesting Thomas Doughty in 1891:

Name: Thomas Doughty
Age: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Weston S Mare, Somerset, England

Occupation: Mason's labourer
Condition as to marriage: Widower

Civil Parish: St Mary
Town: Cardiff
County/Island: Glamorgan
Country: Wales

It looks like there just could be something to that story after all.

I'd check out that death certificate for sure.

Ah. I just thought that one was obvious. ;)

The Hannah Burge born in Somerset 1851, I think it was, might be worth looking at.

In that case, Hannah would have died before Lester, if she was 30 ...

I wonder how one would know when and where and how someone died with info this, uh, odd?

HANNAH [BURGE]
Christening: 14 JAN 1852 Wesleyan Methodist, Clandown, Somerset, England
Father: GEORGE BURGE
Mother: ELIZA
Batch No.: C172171

Of course, the 1881 does say Hannah Lewis was born in Cardiff ... and in 1861 and 71, that Hannah Burge was in Lancashire, so guess not.

The marriage certificate would certainly clear it up some.

I didn't, I found Lester's marriage to Hannah which I think is one of the things Jane was looking for.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 4 May 2009 01:21

There were three Hannah Lewis marriages 1885-1890 in Cardiff. How did you pick one, Claire??

She seems to have been Hannah Birge, per the 1873 marriage, but no Hannah Birge was ever born. Burge?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 4 May 2009 01:19

If Hannah was born 1855 (per the 1881 census, i.e. likely in 1854) and died at age 30, then she would not really have had time to remarry after Lester's death in 1885, would she?

This would appear to be daughter Cecelia's marriage. I can't locate her in the 1891 or 1901 census.

EvieBeavie Report 29 Apr 2009 00:51

No Lester Lewis seems to have died in Cardiff since 1984, so you must be talking earlier.

19th century maybe ...

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 29 Apr 2009 00:49

Your info probably includes some kind of date?

If you have an idea of Lester's birth and death dates, a record might be found of his death (easily, if after 1984), which would help.
