Do you know Leslie's mother's name? Where was Leslie born? Was Leslie's brother William older or younger than him?

What we need to do is start with what you know is correct and then work backwards.

Is Leslie's name spelt 'Leslie' or 'Lesley '?

Do you know when and where Leslie married Else?

Is Leslie still alive? If not, do you know when and where he died?

Joyce Report 17 May 2009 14:02

Could Elsie have been registered under a different name but known as Elsie?
Thee is a marriage in Basford (right area) of a Leslie Cooper and Lydia M Knowles in 1917 Jun Q vol 7b page 392

I went throught he complete BMD Index for deaths 1957-1961 inc and the only one I found was
Leslie Cooper died Basford Dec Q 1861 aged 76
This would make him born 1885 and 15 years out from your figure of 1900 seemed unlikely .However I gave it a go and lo and behold

1901 Belvedere Road Woodville Ahby de la Zouch
William H Cooper 42 Coal Miner b Church Greasly Derbys

Now the plot thickens!
In 1891 the family are in Handsworth Yorks as one would expect from the birth details in 1901 census BUT they are all recorded with the surname HEXTALL!

Emma 30 wife b Unstock Leics
Egan 7 b Church Greasly
Lewie (should be Leslie) b5 b Church Greasly

James Cooper married Charlotte Elliott 1853 Mar Q Ashby de la Zouch
Cant see any explanation for the aberration in names 1891 -whether it was on the part of the enumerator, transcriber or William himself

Another mystery is I cant find the births of the oddly named children Hastings and Merle under Cooper or Hextall

Hi Gillian

The family in Church Greasly sound like them as the information I have is that they are from there. Thanks for the information
