You know you have the correct Florence and Beatrice. This looks like they married and settled in UK while MIEK went to Australia in 1909.

It also look like Ada Catherine was born in 1897 and died in 1906, aged about 9. So she should be on the 1901 census but not on the 1911 census.

Alfred Kimberley died in 1903. Elizabeth would have been 44. Wonder if she remarried?

Yes you've done it again. Now I have more writing to do. Thank you. And thanks to Christine for the explanation of the place names. I am horribly confused sometimes. Sit here with google maps up plotting positions of the various events.

Births Dec 1916
Dixon Leonard W B Kimberley Wandsworth 1d 106

Leonard William B Dixon
20 Nov 1916
Jul 1995
South Cheshire Cheshire

Can't match up any other post-1911 Dixon-Kimberley births (6 boys, one girl) to post-1984 deaths.

For the post-1911 Allen-Kimberley births (3 boys and five girls), this is a possibility for one of the girls:

Births Sep 1925

JaneyCanuck Report 15 Jun 2009 14:30

And another harrowing week of family crises later (all be well now), I return -- just thought I'd review the 1901 people:

Deaths Sep 1906
Kimberley Ada Catherine 8 Chelsea 1a 260

Deaths Sep 1906
Kimberley Ada Catherine 8 Chelsea 1a 260

Births Dec 1885
Kimberley Beatrice Ada M Doncaster 9c 721

Marriages Sep 1906
ALLEN Sidney Herbert Wandsworth 1d 1453
> Kimberley Beatrice Ada M Wandsworth 1d 1453
Mitchell William Thomas Wandsworth 1d 1453
SMALLWOOD Eliza Wandsworth 1d 1453

There are a load of Allen-Kimberly births in Wandsworth 1911-1929, and that seems to be the only matching marriage.

Births Jun 1889
Kimberley Florence Elsie M Huddersfield 9a 333

Marriages Sep 1908
CHAPMAN Charles Edwin Wandsworth 1d 1102
DIXON Sidney Wandsworth 1d 1102
> KIMBERLEY Florence Elsie M Wandsworth 1d 1102
PLANT Mary Ann Wandsworth 1d 1102

There are also a load of Dixon-Kimberley births in Wandsworth during the same period, and again, that seems to be the only matching marriage.

London is a bit strange like that because it grew absorbing villages on the way.
Take Catford for instance, It is in the London Borugh of Lewisham but Lewisham is a seperate town. Lewisham town Hall is in the centre of Catford.

Woolwich is in the London Borogh of Greenwich but used to be Kent. And they all merge into each other almost seamlessly. When I lived in Catford if anyone asked where I came from I would aswer depending on how well they knew the area. I might say Catford Lewisham or even south east London as they all would be true.

LadyKira Report 15 Jun 2009 11:32

Births Dec 1897 (>99%)

Kimberley Ada Catherine Wandsworth 1d 647

Wandsworth is next to Battersea. The registration district of Battersea did not exist until 1930 so if she was born Battersea she woild have been registered Wandsworth.

AuntySherlock Report 15 Jun 2009 08:55

Hi Christine, I am very happy to say that Harry is not one of my Kimberleys. Well at this stage he's not. None of those names ignite any glimmer of hope in my soul.

Ada Katherine is giving me the whoops. I thought I had that lot all sorted. About to embark on the next search and now I'm back Kimberlying again.

Oh no, don't think for one moment I've traced the entire jolly family, bless their little painted faces and horseys. Just thought I had enough to make the tree look respectable in that area.

Now I need to know why the census says AKK was born in Battersea, etc, etc. I can't question that she is the correct Ada because the rest of the family is all there. Except of course Miss Mariann Ivy Elizabeth who choofed off.

LadyKira Report 14 Jun 2009 23:16

I cant remember if this is one of yours but it could be one of your undiscovered Kimberleys. It will make a nice decoration for your desk,268778.0.html

AuntySherlock Report 14 Jun 2009 21:54

This is the 1901 census. It says she was born Battersea London England. However when I search the birth index this entry does not appear to appear.

LadyKira Report 14 Jun 2009 12:59

There are a number of Ada's under search trees but none born Lambeth. One however does not yet know where she was born, Could be worth contacting her.

I have lots of John Smiths.

You could plonk on one of mine then we would be related!!!

Second thoughts........... Janey save me.

Teach her the error of her ways.

AuntySherlock Report 14 Jun 2009 04:19

Ada Katherine Kimberley born 1898 Battersea London. Listed on the 1901 census as daughter of Alfred Kimberley and Elizabeth K imberley(nee Dickinson). Sister of Mariann, Beatrice and Florence.

On the 1901 census Ada Katherine is shown as being 3 years old.

Have hint from Ancestry with this

Ada Kimberley
Birth Date: 25 Sep 1898
Death Registration Month/Year: Jul 1991
Age at death (estimated): 92
Registration district: Mid Warwickshire
Inferred County: Warwickshire
Volume: 31
Page: 428

OK. Think I need the death certificate. Why still Ada Kimberley. Did she not marry or did she marry and then revert to her maiden name.
I know, check out how many hundreds of Ada Kimberley's were born in UK in 1898.

I'm about the invent a new Family History Research strategy. It is to be called "Pick and Plonk". It will help all those with family names in the Smith, Jones, Evans, Brown and Kimberley categories. You put the data into the search, pick one of the names and plonk it into your tree!!
Problem solved!!

AuntySherlock Report 8 Jun 2009 22:26

But wait, the plot thickens. More info received

searched for births 1790-1810, and you could even widen it a bit more.

9. HANNAH SOUTH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 27 JUN 1792 Norton Canon, Hereford, England

That one would be related to the Elizabeth in Norton Cannon for sure, I'd think.

Two kids same name -- one could be a replacement kid. And kids weren't always baptised right after birth, so what seems too close together might not be.

Hard to tell which of those various Hereford ones are actually related, though, for sure.

Oh, and two John South + Sarah marriages --

12 JUN 1788 Norton Canon, Hereford, England
16 NOV 1795 Withington, Hereford, England

So aha, I think that solves some of the births confusion.

Oh well back to the drawing board.

AuntySherlock Report 8 Jun 2009 21:45

Green blood. Dragons. Hmmmm Fits, don't it!!

OK being of almost sound mind and as yet mediocre reearch skills I have identified the problem.

John South married Sarah Barrett on 16 Nov 1795, Withington Hereford England

Children who are listed with John and Sarah as parents, around that date (All dates are christening dates)

Sar (?) South 27 Dec 1797 Withington Hereford
Joseph South 16 Jul 1809 Weston Beggard Hereford
Elizabeth South14 Feb 1797 Norton Canon Hereford
Elizabeth South 5 Jan 1800 Weston Beggrd Hereford

So I'm not dreaming. There are two Elizabeth South's born three years apart with the same parents.
Death details next?? Should be fun!!

Just noticed Sar South ch Feb 1797 and
Elizabeth South ch Dec 1797. Well it is physically possible.

AuntySherlock Report 8 Jun 2009 20:56

Do not compute last post. Not very good on cryptic. Well I am very good on cryptic however in this case......

Have hitch in last lot of data. To summarise.

James Whitney married Eleanor Bannister 2 May 1754 Yazor Hereford
Child(ren) George Whitnes chr 1768 and ???

George Whitney chr Nov 1768 married Catherine Davies on 18 Feb 1794.
Children George chr Sep 1799; James b. 1793; John Thomas chr 1802.

George (1799) married Elizabeth South chr 14 Feb 1797
Children: George South Whitney b. 1825, Maryann Whitney b 1836 and JW, EW, EW, CW, RW etc

Parents of Elizabeth South ....John South and Sarah.
Dates do not fit. Elizabeth's christening date is after her date of birth of 1800. Can't find John and Sarah South.

Just ignore this and I'll go back and do another search for Elizabeth with dob 1797.

LadyKira Report 8 Jun 2009 10:37

I just spent ages typing a rlong eply to David as he challenged.

I hit submit and the thread has gone.

I shall certainly watch out for that name again.

That green blood can stop frothing now.

AuntySherlock Report 8 Jun 2009 06:13

I wasn't thinking our families I really meant your family. Being such a bl**dy expert at it, all of your families are probably very neatly sorted, written up, computerized, filed away and done, back to when Noah was a lad.

I'm generally a perfectionist but my family history research is like a Sarah Lee cake. Layer, upon, layer, upon layer!! And most of it all over my desk.

Have checked out John Backhouse Adelaide SA. He appears to be John Richard Backhouse. My elusive one is John J. Backhouse and I'll bet you his middle name is Jacob.

AuntySherlock Report 8 Jun 2009 05:56

Answering this but I know you've gone to bed. The Backhouse family of which Jacob's Jnr and snr were members had 22 children in it. There is another lot of them in SA and more in southern NSW.

I can not say for certain whether John travelled, lived in Adelaide. None of his other family seemed to go outside of NSW. That doesnt mean to say they didn't. And this entry is probably the easiest for me to double check.

Yes I do know the Ryerson index. There is also a very good cemetery index which searches all cemeteries in Australia. Not thought of giving that a go yet. Used it for a couple of other searches and came up trumps.

John J backhouse would have been born 1937 1938ish.

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jun 2009 02:01

A true pant liner would never say such a thing. ;)

AuntyS -- have you looked at the Ryerson Index?

I'm wondering about the missing John Backhouse.

BACKHOUSE John Death notice 10NOV2005 Publication Adelaide Advertiser 10NOV2005
BACKHOUSE John Death notice 04NOV2005 Death 65 Adelaide Advertiser 09NOV2005

You didn't mention a DOB, but would 1940 be anything like?

Not likely the right place at all, but no stone unturned. Unlike most other listings, it doesn't give "late of" info.

LadyKira Report 8 Jun 2009 01:58

sounds like you got your pantliners in a twist.

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jun 2009 01:53

Oh, btw, at the moment I only have 5 Firefox windows open, a couple of them with a couple of dozen tabs open in them, the others slightly fewer. And an IE window with a few tabs. And that's just for play. When I start the work I'm supposed to be doing, I'll have another several dozen Firefox tabs open in no time flat ...
