Hi - My great-grandfather was Arthur William Jordan, his birth certificate, which I have, states mother name of Emma Jordan - no father listed (Danbury, Essex, 3 May 1985). His marriage certificate gives a father name of JOHN Jordan. I cannot find Arthur William Jordan in the 1871 census when he would have been around 6 or 1881 census. After that, he appears with my great-grandmother and new family.
I have found a John and Emma with a son Arthur Jordan in 1871 in GREAT SHEFFORD, Cambridgeshire - really not sure this is the same one though. Why would father name not be on birth certificate if he was alive and suddenly appear a few years later?
Anyone have any ideas on this or where I can find further information. Have hit a stumbling block.

I'm guessing his year of birth was 1865 not 1985?

Hi Lynne,
I would hazard a guess that Emma Jordan later married John ???????, when Arthur was married he stated his father was John (step father) and added his surname as Jordan, this may have saved any uncomfortable questions regarding his father???
Or maybe Emma didn't marry a John and Arthur just stated John as his father to save face?????

This is a strong possible, Arthur puts "W" in the 1891 and 1901 census....... maybe he used William so not to confuse things???
1871 England Census about William Jorden Name: William Jorden Age: 5 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866 Relation: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Danbury, Essex, England Civil Parish: Danbury County/Island: Essex Country: England Street address:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Sep 1857 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jordan Elizabeth Ann Chelmsford 4a 199 Mead Robert Chelmsford 4a [1_]99
Ann Elizabeth is most likely to be Ann from the 1841 census, parents George and Sarah......... Emma's sister.

Dee - this is all absolutely fantastic. Thank you so very much for your help. You know, I've come across all of this information in one way or another myself (ancestry.co.uk) etc., but just couldn't put it all together. I think I wasn't really collating the necessary information in the right way to make it simple!
I think I really have to go with the possibility that William Jorden lodged with Ann Elizabeth (aunt), that his uncle's name, John, was used on marriage certificate and that Emma - later married Bines and had further children. This really is the most plausible.
Seriously - cannot thank you enough for this.
