Im trying to find out any information on Joseph Wright Johnson,
he was born in the early 1800's (i dont know where). All i know about him is that he was married to a lady called Elizabeth. They had 5 children. On his daughter Ann's marriage certificate in 1879 hes listed as a Mariner, it doesnt state deceased. Hes not showing on the census in 1851 when the family lived st george in the east, tower hamlets or any others. please can anyone point me in the right direction.

thanks for that info. i think this isnt the correct one, his daughter was born around 1840, so i need to find one born earlier than 1828.

I have looked into the Joseph Wright Johnson christening in Saltfleet and that guy was an agricultural labourer. I think the marriage found by Sablon goes with this guy.

As the marriage above has the spouse Elizabeth Wright I'm wondering whether you're looking for a birth for plain Joseph Johnson - could he have taken the Wright part of his name when he married?? What do you think Sablon?

Lynne as another thread on this in the Surname Information Board.

I've nudged it for you..... (sorry don't know how to do the URL thingy!!)

It looks like the mother is always alone with the children on the census returns............ however if he was a mariner there's a strong chance that he wont be found on the censuses.

Denise - to put the URL in - look right at the top of the screen where you see http://etc

Hover the curser over the URL and left click so its highlighted blue, then right click the mouse and a drop down menu appears - left click on COPY.

Go back to the thread and set the curser where you want to copy the information, right mouse click and on the drop down menu select PASTE.

It sounds more complicated than it really is.

If his ship was in an English or Welsh port at the time of the census, he should appear on the census but with such a common name it will take a lot of searching for!

Do you have this (from familysearch):

ANN ELIZABETH JOHNSON Pedigree

Event(s):
Birth: 18 JUN 1838

Christening: 29 JUL 1838 Saint George In The East, Stepney, London, England

Parents:
Father: JOSEPH WRIGHT JOHNSON Family
Mother: ELIZABETH

There is this birth which might be for the above - the birth cert would confirm it:

Births Sep 1838 (>99%)
JOHNSON Ann Elizabeth St Geo East 2 68

If the marriage for Joseph Wright Johnson and Elizabeth Wright is correct, going on the children's ages (from your other thread) either Joseph was married before or Elizabeth was and the children took Joseph's name. Ann's birth cert should give Elizabeth's first married name if she had been married before.
