Edmund Evans 1832-1902 my 3rd great grandfather was a grocer in Manchester. Could anyone please tell me if they have a copy of trade directories or where i can locate them for the Hyde area of Manchester. I am unsure of exact dates tho or name/location of business

Im not sure if Historical Directories cover that area - you could try.

Otherwise you could try the records office local to the area. Have you found him in the 1901 ?

To be honest, my lot that Ive found only give name and the address - not a lot to be gleaned from directories.

The shop at 27 cheapside is still a grocer shop in 1901 census run by William Whitworth age 43. Looks like your ancestor run the shop for at least 10 years as it is the same address in 1881 and 1891 census. Good luck Irene

Does it not give his status on the 1901? Usually it will say something like employed or employer of xxxxx. You need to look at the image.

As far as i can see it does not say whether he is employed or an employee

In 1901 he is shown as retired grocer - lodging with someone.

In 1891 the box is ticked as "neither employer or employed" (gawd knows what that is meant to signify)

However, the girls are in good employment - a school mistress, a hatter and a pupil teacher - so family reasonably comfortable I would have thought.

1881 just shown as grocer.

AH, 1871, shown as shopkeeper. So we can safely assume he is an owner/grocer.

in 1861 - a boiler maker.

51 and 41 bless, working as a cotton winder. The boy did good, you should be proud of him :)

Have you checked for any wills on National Archives or elsewhere?
